Decent mice

It seems my Razer Lachesis is on the fritz - the mouse wheel is either ignoring clicks, or clicking multiple times when I press it. Gotta admit, I'm not too impressed (I already had it replaced once for a similar issue)

It's totally out of warranty now, so I gotta think about the future.

Any suggestions on a good comfortable gaming mouse? I rather like the wife's Logitech G5, but those things are somewhat discontinued nowadays. And sadly the market is flooded with horrifying-looking monstrosities like the Cyborg RAT series.

Oh, and since it seems a £60 mouse is a waste of money when it's built by chimps, I'd welcome suggestions costing somewhat less - e.g. have been looking at the Silverstone Raven

Logitech MX518 can still be bought (including direct from Logitech), though there aren't currently any good offers. Amazingly durable and still pretty much the reference gaming mouse.

The G400 is Logitech's self-proclaimed replacement for the MX518, and has just been released, so expect to see more of that in stores soon.

Both RRP around the £35 mark, the MX518 has been under £20 on offers.

I went through around 5 Razer mice before I just gave up on the brand, they don't seem to want to last very long at all. I've had my MX518 for years upon years and it's still going as strong as ever. One very durable mouse.

Yeah my experience with razer wasn't very good either. Had a keyboard off them, very pretty, lovely to type on, but died after 3 months. Had so much trouble with the RMA, I just binned it and took it as a lesson.

You won't go wrong with Logitech. I've tried a few brands, but I've come back, rock solid build quality. My MX1000 I bought not long after it came out, which I've used so much I've worn the paint off it and been through more feet than I can remember(all provided free by Logitech) still works perfectly, still holds it's charge, and when things do go wrong, the best RMA service I've ever dealt with.

Now sitting here with a Logitech mouse, keyboard and headset.

My MX1000 I bought not long after it came out, which I've used so much I've worn the paint off it

I've 2 MX1000's which I swap on the charger after the first charger failed. They're great and much less pointy in the hand than the current Performance Mouse MX (Darkfield um good).

I'm currently trialing their M500 at work which it suits perfectly. For £30 you get a laser, side-scroll, switchable free-rolling wheel, fwd/bck buttons and cable (discourages theft). Great value for 8hrs+/day use.

Are you bothered by wireless?
Is a well weighted mouse better than one you can tweak the weight?
Do you want somewhere to rest your hand or is a wrist-rest + light finger-driven movement more your style?

PC World seem to have an M705 Marathon which looks suspiciously like the MX1000 with an updated scroll wheel/grip - just ignore their price! (£45 list)

I don't care much about wireless or customizable weight - but I prefer a larger mouse I can put my palm on. Honestly, I *like* the Lachesis, other than the reliability issues

I use a Sharkoon FireGlider as I have bigger hands. Good size, responsive and good software. Also comes in black for just under £24.

I'd like to use Logitec but as a left hander I can't. I'm on my 4th Razer and tbh I'll buy another one when this one dies.

I like the feel of them and they work very well. They do seem to have a problem with the button switches though. That's what seems to kill most of them eventually.

Mine have lasted quite a long time though. My first diamondback lasted about 3 years which I didn't consider too bad considering how much I use it. The diamondback I have now has been going strong for about 3 years and shows no sign of failure.

The sucssesor for that mouse is the G500 which I've seen recommended all over the place. Even on top spec PC builds (£2000+) I've seen this mouse on them. The cheapest I can find it is £36 at Dixons/Currys/PCWorld.

The G400, as mentioned above, is pretty much the optical alternative to this. I think it has 1 less button on the side.

I've heard that Logitech's customer support is great, and they'll replace the mouse if it ever goes wrong! Brilliant

Personally I would go for another mx518. The fancy new mice tend to have their own set of issues and you pay for the privilege. MX518 is very cheap and Logitech Warranty is decent if you get any problems

What I like about this mouse:

The balance, the shape, the weight, the lift off distance, the thumb buttons work fine and nicely positioned, and the scroll button pushes in nicely and can be used as an extra button (some are awkward to press like the g9). The surface feels fine, not too slippery, not too rough).

The actual optical sensor is good (~3ms / second) - better than most laser in terms of how fast you can move the mouse without it malfunctioning. Due to it being optical it doesn't get negative acceleration and other stuff. Its recommended to not install the setpoint software though as it can cause issues with the sensor I believe

On the downside, it doesn't have increased polling rate, just the standard 125ms rather than the 500 or so newer mice can have (1000 usually comes with accuracy issues). I can't really tell the difference tbh and I also have a g9x plugged in atm. Much prefer the mx518 after playing with each. I won't put the lack of weights as a downside just because I don't really have much use for them. DPI range is fine, 400, 800 and 1800. I use 400 atm

I used a mx510 for a few years before mx518 so I might be a little biased. If you're used to a shape of mouse and it works well for you, then its usually best not to change it imo. I tried to get used to the g9x but I just don't see the improvement over mx518 personally

Roccat Kone (ROC-11-501) for me, comfiest mouse i've ever had, and lasted longer than most others too
The cable hasn't worn through where it constantly rubs on my desk
The original Teflon pads haven't worn out yet either

Perfect companion for my Razor exactmat, although the mat is defiantly showing signs of wear these days.

Otherwise, crack it open, spray a bit of WD40 into the microswitch - solves it 9 times out of 10. Few guides on Google, but I doubt you'll need them.

The mouse wheel on mr razer stopped working. Anyone know what could be causing this? The middle mouse button still works though. I might crack it open and have a look inside! Any tips on what I should be looking out for?

I would go for the MX518 myself. G500 is the logical answer, but if the weights don't interest you (and as a G5 owner I would confirm that they shouldn't), the MX518 is better value.
