Is it my Optical Drive ?

Was asked by my Mum to make a copy of a DVD Dad made of Granddad playing the local churh organ at Christmas Eve from some years ago for my aunty who'd lost the copy Dad had made for her, and he no longer has the original tape.

I said fine no problem and then fired up DVD Shrink (I make an ISO of the movie then burn using Nero) anyway when it got to the encoding stage DVD Shrink said 10 hours remaining.

Tried to do a disc-to-disc copy using Nero and too take took ages also. Popped into my Laptop ran DVD Shrink and it had the ISO file made in 26 minutes flat.

DVD-RW drive in my PC is a Samsung, the rest of the spec is Phenom II X2 555 BE, 4 Gig Ram Windows 7 and GTX 460.

Laptop Core I3 M350 2.27, 4 Gig ram, Intel GFX - was stunned it was quicker on this than it was my PC

    Suggestions ?

Worth checking Imgburn or similar just to rule out software.

I guess even if that still shows problems, it may be something other than the DVD drive (i.e. OS fault, dodgy cable etc), but if it's reading fine then that seems unlikely, and given how cheap DVD drives are these days it probably isn't worth your effort?

Tempted to just get another drive, I mean plays DVD's fine, could be the cable, will try another one before buying another drive.

Even if the dvd reads the disk, it could still be faulty, the lasers used for reading the disk are different to the lasers doing the writing. But as you've already noted, the drives are cheap enough now not to worry over replacing.

Re: Is it my Optical Drive ?

Looks like it was just a corrupt Windows install, seems to be ok now, it's been knocking DVD's out like Fords !
