Q6700 & 4Gig DDR2 -> Corei5 and 8Gig DDR3?
Lo people
I'm busy.. dead busy. I have my trusty Qx6700 at 2.9 and 4 gig of DDR2. I HAD 3 gig DDR 2 but it made no difference at all to almost anything I did.
In my cupboard is a S1155 mobo that I got cheap late last year...it effectively is doing nothing.
However... Scan are selling Corei5 2500K CPu's at 3.3 Gig and 8 gig of ram got £197.
It'll mean a full reinstall and that takes time...
but is it WORTH the time?

My Q6600 runs at 2.91GHZ!! I don't intend to replace it until next year when Bulldozer,Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge E will all been released.
At the very least I would wait another month or two for Bulldozer to be released so hopefully prices will drop for the Core i5 2500K.
I would be tempted to get the RAM soon though. I have seen 8GB of 1333MHZ DDR3 for around £33.
With regards to time - if the PC does the job fine ATM I would not bother.

Depends what programs you're using frequently. Otherwise if it's anything intensive (image editing, 3d especially) it would be worth the time.
Re: Q6700 & 4Gig DDR2 -> Corei5 and 8Gig DDR3?
i'd go for it good price.
The whole waiting for next gen to come along is a waste of time when ivybridge and such come along the price of the current stuff wont go down much it will just disappear and be rebranded stuff thats the same but will be called something else. And i cant see Bulldozer having that much of an effect on sandybridge prices its either gonna be similar performance for similar money or it will blow sandybridge away then intel will bring out its new stuff.
The 2500k is a good processor and overclocked will hold its own for a long long while

cheers for advice guys.
I just checked and my mobo is a S1156 so need the older cpu after all.
Might just flog it.
Re: Q6700 & 4Gig DDR2 -> Corei5 and 8Gig DDR3?
I've just swapped from my old Q6600 running at 3.8 GHz and got the 2500K (see system spec :)). I can say without a doubt that it is quicker due to the use of the QPI rather than the having an FSB and with a bit of tweaking I've managed to get my OC profile up to 5 GHz for when I need power and speed.
I still have my Q6600 system up and running so if you need me to run any tests on the 2 to see a comparison, let me know and I'll get them done on the bank holiday :)

Lee, the 2500k doesn't have QPI :p Only the i7-900 series chips use that. The 2500k uses DMI, just like the Q600.

5gig... bloody hell
no wonder it feels fast!!
