New spec list - but not for me.

right guys, your mission - should you chose to accept is this. my old boss who i'm good mates with wants a new rig, i did quote him a while ago but things changed and his arm is now covered in a mecano kit. now haven't had time today to look it over as i'm pc-less as i'm cleaning/rebuilding mine and can't be arsed to trawl the pages with my sgs.....take way to long .

so need to spec him a new one up. primarily it will be used for working purposes when he isn't in the office. so will be using stuff like mitsubishi's gx/iec developer for software programming (which also runs like a virtual plc so lots of mem maybe), lots of cad work - albeit 2d electrical schematics and layouts. also does a bit of video editing and some gaming.

cpu preference is intel and the way the land lays at this moment in time i don't see that changing, and the land of gpu's is for team green and he wants to stay with - he mentioned the 580 word on the phone to me the other day so thats the start point for the gpu. memory wise i think plenty of as when using developer (i have experience using it) it's amazing how many windows and other bits you have open just for it, so a start of 8gb is probably wise. other than that spec what you will.

the budget is about £1500-£1600, one stipulation he has (and i don't know for the love of nothing holy why) is that he wants a 3d kit - monitor & glasses. and some degree of making it last for a while and have (in his words not mine) poooooooooooooooooooooooooower

    so basic requirements are

cpu - i7 of some flavour
    cooling - air or an aio..............but not a cool-it
mobo - to suit, not all bells and no whistles
gpu - well gtx580 is a start, somehow don't think sli is need or in budget
mem - min 8gb, but as i say - never have to much, always to little
storage - spec for a 64/128 ssd with 1tb or 2tb drives, need to clarify as not mentioned ssd to me.
psu - ss/be quiet/seasonic, something along those lines but mut be capable of handling 580 sli - as i can't guarantee he won't do something silly like do it
drives - not interested in blu-ray, so just a good solid dvd burner will do
case - currently has a thermaltake armour, but wants something a bit smaller/better/friendly. so a good quality midi tower with some hdd expansion.

also 24" or bigger monitor for use with nvida 3d kit .....which is also needed.

i know it's gonna be hard with the budget, but see what you can come up with - i'm sure i could get him to stretch the money a bit if needed/worth it.

not had time to sort today, but if harry has me up tonight i have a butchers at 2-3am while i'm trying to get him off to sleep................staring at my screen looking at components often makes me wanna go to sleep to

Wait until AMD Bulldozer is released next month. The 8 core FX8000 series will probably have very impressive performance in video encoding, any 3D work and virtualisation. At the very least prices will drop for the Intel Core i7. Even in something like HandBrake,a Phenom II X6 is not that much behind a Core i7 2600K at similar clockspeeds.

Also,AFAIK the 3D monitors use TN panels too and I am not sure how good the 2D image quality when compared to similarly priced monitors with IPS and VA panels. OTH,some people get sick of 3D gaming very quickly so I would try it out on another system before committing loads of money to it.

A pair of GTX580 cards in SLI is a waste of money. You might as well get a pair of GTX570 cards.

will see if i can put him off for a bit, but his machine is now on the last legs and can't do without for work/programing purposes - esp as he is off work for a while until the mecano kit comes off his arm and will be working from home.

as for the 3d, it's a fad - but he likes his toys.

You really need to check whether a Core i7 970 six core processor or a quad core Core i7 2600K will be better suited for the work applications you are running.
