Red face Up-gradable ?Dell Dimension 520

    Hi Guys,

I think it's time to get a new pc. But I would like to try to upgrade what I've got first.
I have a Dell dimension 520 (Core 2 Duo E6300). I'm sure this mother board won't fit the i5/i7. Is it possible to upgrade the mother board and get the i5? or the case won't fit?

Or am I completely on the wrong track?

    Thanks!

Yep, i doubt the dell case would use the atx standard. nor will a core i fit in the 775skt motherboard

Aye, you can't install a non-LGA775 CPU in the Dell Dimension 520's stock motherboard- however if you want a simple CPU upgrade then you could update the BIOS to the most recent version and replace the CPU with a Q6600 or Q6700 quad core (proof that it works http://en.community.dell.com/dell-groups/gaming/f/3344/p/19015068/19425007.aspx#19425007").

As for a much newer CPU (like an i5) then you would need a new motherboard. As the dell doesn't seem to use an ATX standard motherboard then this would prove very tricky. Instead you would be much better off replacing the case at the same time you get a new motherboard/CPU/RAM. A decent case doesn't need to cost a lot - something like

If it's an E520 then it uses a BTX motherboard so an ATX or uATX won't fit.
