Hi mate,
This is just my opinion:
PSU: Antec True Power 550W : £93
Mobo: Abit KV8-MAX3 : £105 (1 for sale in Sale Section of Hexus for £75)
Memory: GeIL 2x512MB PC3500 Ultra Series CAS2 : £205
CPU: AMD 64 2800 (oem) : £120 (if your intending on overclocking?)
Heatsink: Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu : £37
Soundcard: Audigy2 (oem) : £50
HDD: WD Raptor 36.7GB x 2 (Raid0) : £160
DVD Drive: NEC ND2500A 8x DVD±R/±RW (oem) : £57
[All prices quoted from www.overclockers.co.uk]
TOTAL : £830 (ok over budget, but these are my choices, you may choose differently), enjoy....................
Thanks for your input mate.
I have heard that the abit has some issues?
I will definately need more storage space too. I was thinking of getting a SATA drive as I need to keep to my budget.
I am thinking of o/c too is it better to get the 2800 over the 3000?
I was also thinking that the corsair 4000 ram was a good deal at overclockers.
Main Rig: i2600k@4.3Ghz/ASUS P8P67 PRO/MSi GTX580/16GB Mushkin/HAF X/Noctua NH-D14
Well Hard drive wise i would suggest the 250gb sata hitatchi as it's the fastest drive around after the raptors. You can always add a raptor drive for your system later if you wanted.
Also - how much can amd 64's be overclocked - i thought they weent too good at it.....no point getting ram thats beyond what the cpu/mobo will stretch to...

hi guys,
Funnelhead has a good point, pointless in getting ddr500 (250fsb) if the cpu wont do over 210fsb. To be honest I'm no AMD expert (been Intel since the 800fsb's) but I have heard that the new socket 939's are the dog's danglies (dont need registered mem like the 940's), but I hear that their overclocking is poor, so you'd have to go for the 3800 which will prob cost some wanga.
The reason I stated the raptors is that in many systems now-a-days the bottleneck is the systems hard drive (also memory too), so the raptors are about the fastest you can buy, any way good luck mate.
AMD 64 is poor at o/cing. The built in memory controller stops it going much further than defaults. You can change the Hyper Transport clock though. In my opinion, if I wanted to o/c then i'd go with an Athlon XP, maybe a mobile, unlock the multiplier and away you go. If you do go for the 64 though (who couldn't resist the 64 bitness of it) i would suggest sticking with slower ram, 2100 maybe or 2700 because they don't like overclocking.
Thats just my 2 pence
Thanks for the input then guys.So what would you spec out for the whole system.

If you dont have a clue... you should offer your 2 cents or pence. lol "slower ram like PC2100 b/c they dont like OC'ing!" wtf?!Originally Posted by r1zeek
Its true A64 boards in general dont OC well at least not compared to 50% OC's on Intel boards. But even at default they are the shiznit for gaming. I would get a new 939 pin mobo with a A64 3500+ = $485! Its expensive, but worth it for the performance. And the newer mobo's like NF250GB are supposed to have a locked PCI/AGP bus and allow a little better OC'ing. But dont expect much more than 10% (220FSB) SO you dont need DDR500, get some good low latency PC3200 or 3500
You could save some money and get a cheaper 754 pin socket mobo and slower CPU like a A64 3000 or 2800 most benchmarks show they perform on par with the 939pin mobo's, but might not be as upgradeable in the future. (might not take dual core CPU's, or higher freq CPU's)
Do you really need to get a system at this minute?
AMD and Intel are releasing new Chipsets, Sockets and CPUs. You would be better holding off for a month or two.
The new Socket 939 will be very good as it will be compatible with all new AMD chips up until mid next year. Just get one of these boards and a low chip until later when the prices start coming back down to earth. The FX53 is going up in price instead of down like normal chips! From $750 to $799 for a 1000.
For the other components I recommend these:
Memory: 2x 512MB Crucial CL2.5 PC400 ram (£68.14 each)
PSU: 1x Tagan 480w Silent PSU (£60)
Mobo: Socket 939
CPU: Socket 939 CPU
Heatsink: Standard AMD one, if it ant broke dont fix it. (£10)
Soundcard: I find the on board ones are fine, spend more on the others and upgrade this later.
HDD1: WD Raptor 36.7GB (SATA) (Main Drive) (£70)
HDD2: WD WJ200 200GB (SATA) (Storage Drive) (£90)
DVD Drive: NEC ND2500A 8x DVD±R/±RW, make sure its the duel layer upgradable model (oem) (£57)
Mem= £136.28
PSU= £60
Mobo= N/a
CPU= N/a
Heatsink= £10
SoundCard= N/a
HDD1= £70
HDD2= £90
DVD Drive= £57
Total= £423.28
That still leaves you with £326.72 for a CPU and Motherboard. Split it and you have £200 for a chip and £125 for a motherboard.
Im not a fan of these over priced memory makers, i was overclocking Crucial memory before most of the these guys started selling in the uk. Plus Crucial is made in Britain.
wedge - you english buoy?? just it helps in saying which shops to go to....
yes 939 is the best way to go, but not sure how long till it hits retail.... Plus AMd are going to keep supporting 754, though in a more budget fashion in the future.
So what we need is the best 754 board ( abit max seems to have a lot of problems... look at scan)Sometihng based on via 800 PRO would be good i think
Athlon 64 3000 oem - £130 cpucity
zalman sounds good
meridion psu 550Wat - £54 scan
250gb hitachi - £138 scan
2X 512 low latency 3500 - dont know about this
DVD Drive: NEC ND2510 dual layer drive - £68 scan

Thanks for all your help guys.
My reasoning behind upgrading is that I have just got a X800 pro and now my cpu is my system bottleneck so i thought why not go to 64bit goodness. Is it worth getting a 3000cpu or just overclocking a 2800? I do not know if it worth waiting for new amd chips as they will be very pricey when new and the 754 pin ones will drop in price.
