    Data recovery?

    Hello,

    if you have a fat32 win98 machine and it gets wiped, and then windows 2000 goes on with an NTFS format wiping everything that is on the hard drive - like important documents etc - is it possible to recover the deleted files?

    or is it gone like the dodos?

    ops: (not me that wiped it, but now my job to restore if possible while said person who wiped it is on holiday!)

    erm, the oops smiley doesn't work

    If the windows install hasn't overwritten the sectors containing the important files, then maybe you'll be able to get them back through some recover software.

    Otherwise it's an expensive affair...
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    I'm trying a program called GetDataBack but so far it's only seen the NTFS partition.

    ah, I was using getdataback for ntfs, so i'm using the one for fat now - so i'll see how it goes

    Looks like you might have to kiss it all goodbye, unless you wanna be out big-bucks sending your drive some data recovery specialists.

    A side note - I once convinced a friend to type and execute 'attrib -shr' (i think) and then 'rm *.*' in his unix account on the DEC stations way back in uni. I thought it was dead funny, but he wasnt amused - lost everything (I mean everything) and had to go to system admin to get a new account setup - ROFL
