I'll never trust the IBM DeathStars... no matter how many generations it has gone. The 45gxp, 60gxp and 75gxp were all unreliable and problem making. I've had 2 75gxp (got them for free) one is actually still alive, but haven't used it much and it makes lots of strange noices... Wouldn't trust it for more than my browsers cache files.
I go WD for the quality. I have seen them run 24/7 for years, and many of them, without any issues. They make some noice, more than some others, but I think you can always count on them, and they give you all the speed you desire. If what you desire isn't 10 extra points on the HDD test of Pcmark that is
Light travels faster than sound. Is this why some people appear bright until you hear them speak?
Personally I would stay away from the IBM deathstars. I know so many people that have had them fail that quite frankly I just wouldn't risk it.
Had a samsung 20Gb running for 4 years and a WD caviar 80Gb running for 2 years - both faultless. Not as quiet as the more modern drives but still ok.
Been looking at maybe raiding 2 120Gb Samsungs for myself but am still trying to find a decent review of all drives including how quiet they are.
Right, IBM are out now. I might consider a Maxtor drive, but which models would suit me (reasonable performance, about £60, very reliable)? Seagate's 7200.7 are still a likely option for me.

they're not even made by ibm anymore, they're made by hitachi. Different design. Quieter than all apart from the seagate. Faster than all apart from the raptor....
and mike, you're looking at paying £60 for a 120 gb
the link i posted for you is £63 for 160gb...
did you read the reviews at all? they have a reliability database over at storagereview listing thousands of drives..
nevermind, you're welcome

I'm not saying I don't trust Hitachi's new drives, it's just that every deathstar I've bought has died - and every deathstar I know of has died.
I'll let someone else take the risk this time, performance and value are not my primary consideration when buying a hard drive.
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.
I had a look at storage review (useful site for hard drives by the way, thanks), especially the Seagate 7200.7 and Maxtor reviews. When I had a look at the IBM review, the reliability didn't seem quite as good as the others, and their past record isn't exactly impressive. I don't mind that I'm not getting the best value for money, the most important thing is that it will last me a long time and won't break anytime soon.Originally Posted by funnelhead

Well i've had four ibms that didnt die, but i guess i'm just lucky...Still good luck choosing a drive.
I just bought a 7200.7 200gb, and i must say - it's very quiet. i'd recoommend that over the maxtor since they perform similarly. but if noise isnt an issue theres not much between 'em.
easy now,
F

I've always liked Maxtors myself. Never had any problems.
