    Upgrade needed; suggestions/advice!

    Hi,

    Need to do some updates;

    Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.40 ghz // 2.39 ghz
    Memory (RAM) 2.0gb

    Gfx: Nvidia GeForce 8500GT

Used to be clued up with Hardware and stuff... now I'm clueless. lol

Anyone recommend decent Processor and Gfx? I'd mainly use gfx for playing EVE or other online games such as Command & Conquer, I'm not a massive gaming fan for pc.

    Any suggestions on Processor? Memory?

    Cheers for any advice

Could list what the specifications of your system are, specifically what motherboard and PSU you have??

What resolution do you play at??

    What is your budget??

TBH,another 2GB of RAM and a better graphics card should do you.

One of these graphics cards would be a massive upgrade over what you have:

I'll find that out, on the Laptop atm

What resolution do you play at??

Current windows resolution is @ - 1152x864 (48" LCD TV)

    What is your budget??

Not looking to spend much, but will fork out a bit for the gfx card.

Think I may just go with this, but depends on gfx card. May invest in a 1TB HDD too.

    Gigabyte NVIDIA GT220
    1GB 128Bit
DDR2 Fan VGA DVI HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card

Is that card any good? Retailed @ £54.00

Also, what AMD Processors are better?

    AMD Athlon II?
    AMD Phenom II?

Suggest potential Motherboard/Processor compatability if going for AMD? Bearing in mind I am not looking for high-end gaming.

The graphics card you mentioned is not taht great for running games.

I would run CPU-Z to get some more information on your system:

    http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

It will tell you what motherboard you have. How many RAM slots does it have??

You have a Q6600 it seems so this should be fine still.

Is your PC a pre-built one?? If so what model number is it?? If you are using a custom built PC,what case are you using. At the very least how much space do you have for a graphics card?? You will need a tape measure to see how many inches there are between the back of the case and the hard drive cage.

You also need to find out what PSU model you have too. This is important to determine what graphics card you can run/

Listen to the Cat, he may be moose obsessed but he talks sense otherwise

You seem to like Nvidia cards, we can advise but need to know budget. For example, a GT460 will be massively faster than a 220. Double the money gets you from 48 shaders to 336. Thats a factor of 7. Those shaders are clocked higher as well, and you get a faster memory system to keep those shaders fed with graphics data. That may not be the best card for you, but I can be fairly sure a GT220 is the wrong one.

The thing is, better graphics cards can be hard on the PSU, hence we need to know exactly what PSU you are running as that may need to be updated too.

Your CPU should be fine. Unless you are looking for an excuse to change it, and we have all been there I'm sure

The only reason I sway for Nvidia is simply every PC I had used the Nvidia card, however if ATi have a better card within my budget I'd buy the ATi without a doubt.

I think I'll just be getting the card The Moose Man mentioned:

Sapphire HD 6770 1GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card
    And another 2gb of RAM

Thanks for the advice guys, I think in time... I might end up doing alot of research and building my own rig. And I know where to come for help/info

I know a couple of people with 6770 based cards, and both are very happy with them.

That should give your rig a new lease of life, hope you enjoy it

How much budget do you have ?

    I would go with intel k2500k CPu + P8Z68 mobo + Gtx 560Ti + PSU 600-750 + 4/8Gb ram

    Super fast gaming machine

That setup will cost him quiet a bit, plus all his old bits would be of no use ( not that they are useful now tho )

another route is wait for amd bulldozer or get phenom II 565 + ga-990fxa-ud3, unlock to 4cores and wait till dozer shows up. memory-wise, doesnt matter that much, just get 2 sticks 4gig each, dual chan - ddr3, they are very cheap now. got corsair vengeance black - 2x4gb cas8, works well, so id suggest that, cas9 is cheaper. if your not a massive gamer 560ti or 6850, depends what you like. id get modular psu but their a bit more expensive, go for 750W no more, as you wont be needing anything above that. Antec TruePower New TP-750 Blue for example. No i dont have that
