Just two different standards from earlier days that has resulted in most drives now supporting both the plus and minus DVD's. The NEC 2500a is a great drive that supports both standards and isn't fussy about which brand or unbrand of media you buy although now you can get 12x and dual layer drives if you can afford to spend more. Lots of indepth info about +/- if you really want to know but makes no odds to me so long I can burn stuff on the discs. I think some stand alone DVD players are fussy about which discs so you just test a few different ones and stick with what works best with your particular kit.

Basically DVD-R has is more compatible with the standalone DVD palyers that sit under the TV. They are also much more compatible with PC DVD-ROM drives.

I think that DVD-RW will work with 95% of all standalones and DVD+r with 75% of all standalones.

Other than that, not much difference as far as data storage and DVD backups are concerned.
