    Arrow Maxtor vs Seagate

Just wondering what hard drive would be the better choice of the 2. I'm looking at either the 120 gig Seagate 7200.7 or the 120 gig maxtor w/8 meg cache. The specs on both are very similar. Oh yeah, I'm looking at the SATA models of both drives. Any input would be appreciated!

traditionally the seagates have been quieter, due to their fluid bearing shinola (im assuming youre looking at a baraccua). Ive had one, and its been pretty damn quiet. Both are decent from my experience, and from what Ive heard from others.

The 8meg cache versions are considerably faster than the WD's.
In fact the Maxtor 8meg cache ones are the fastest drive you can buy - google for reviews, storage review has some charts showing the differences

By default, they are noisier than the Seagate's when reading and writing, but for a small performance hit, you can change this with acoustic management tools for the drive (3 settings), so you can find your happy medium

After looking into things a little bit..... the noise level is not far off
In-fact the Seagate's are louder during read/write mode

But idle there is only 1 bell in it.... I would definitely go Maxtor in that case

I'd vote for the Seagate, although check the warranty is the same on both drives, I have a feeling some of the Seags now have only 1 year.

Yes the IDE HD insustry std moved to just 1 year! WD's 7200rpm 8MB HD's are generally the exception and the biggest reason for buying their noisy non-FDB based HDs. I agree as a general rule WD are fastest with Maxtor close behind (but much quieter esp Ac Man) and Seagate offering quiet operation for a minimal perf hit. ALl Maxtor HDs have used FDB for quite a while now so I'd also rec them unless you want a 3 year warranty. The Maxtor SATA150 HD is a top drive; quiet, fast, reliable (so far) and also sport a classic power connector too! TBH though diffs really aren't that huge, many people don't even notice much diff when they upgrade their HD but then it depends on what they had before.

I'm sure Ive heard only the Maxtor's that are 120gig and over carry the 3 year warranty, apparently the 80gig's only have 1 year :/

Maxtor is the best overall, a hdd that you can hear just gets annoying. I got a maxtor 40gb and its never had any problems, though I have a few servers which we run WD in because it is the faster drive.

Maxtors had a problem with their DX740 range, thankfully though all those ones I returned they gave me larger, recently released drives. So I am not complaining!

Segate have been quite reliable of all the computers I fiddle with. IBM being the worst. I'd vote Maxtor.

Just out of interest, where did you get that info Flanderz?

I ask 'cos I've had failure after failure on my maxtor's and even my RMA replacements have failed

Just curious. I still have one d740x drive in my system, but the other has been replaced by a DM9, so that (hopefully) will remain reliable.

IIRC there was a bad batch or to. It wasnt a wide spread problem and only effected a few (compared to how many was produced).
If you phone maxtor up and explain this is the second drive that has failed for you, they have a habit of upgrading them for free when you RMA it again

Make 100% sure its dieing first though. Use maxtors powermax tools

my d740x is niosy, non-fdb one
my 120gb dm9 is great though, no bad bits but i shoulda got the 8mb cache one, more warrenty and faster but, i didnt know that then
id definatky say the maxtor sata 120gb 8mb cache or better, thats about as good as u can get
in the reviews ive seen the maxtor is the fastest drive, but it didnt show raptors or wd drives but they are too niosy
