    alienware marketing: out of control?

reading alienware today, i spyed this:

"For discerning PC gamers, the ultimate Far Cry experience can only be found on Alienware's award winning machines."

Cord Smith, Brand Manager, Ubisoft Entertainment.

not only that, apparantly AMD and NVIDIA are the official hardware of Farcry.

Similar to UT2003's nvidia message, only to me a bit harsher.

What do you guys think? The message (from the brand manager... ) seems to be the only alienware make decent enough systems. Totally regarding the fact that for less money, I could build a system:

that had better cooling (thus wasn't so loud)
    was faster
    was cheaper
    and looked better!

My personal opinion is that alienware kit is for people who can't build a PC themselves, and have way too much money.

To that end, that sort of person is likely to be lured in to such marketing.

I mean no offense to anybody with an alienware PC, but to be fair, all alienware are doing is targeting their niche market...

Exactly - they identified a gap in the market catering for funky rich people that cant be bothered to build theyre own monsta pc, and made a business out of it. I totally dont see what the problem is or why people slate them so often.

They make nice systems for the people who dont mind spending the extra buck for a high end system. Though I or most people on this message board could build a faster system for less money. 98% of people out there dont have any interest in building their own system. The 2% who do lurk these message boards.

Anyway, knocking them is like knocking Porsche for selling highend sports cars, and saying you should build/soup-up your own car. (not exact comparison, but similar)

Saw a Alienware logo in PCPowerplay last year in a Vivendi ad-even though the brand was not sold over here-but one brand in Australia-Plus Corp's PC's are a lot like Alienwares.

Kinda annoying if you're building a comp for someone. I was gonna build a comp for my mate at school so he could play games like Far Cry and BF:V. Now he goes looking through PC Gamer and he finds an ad for Alienware which says "the ultimate Far Cry experience" He then comes into school and he's like "You can only play Far Cry on alienware, so if you build me a computer it wont be able to play far cry" Took alot of persuading and explanation but he still thinks only Alienware play Far Cry....he is a bit thick though.....

I know three computer phobes with too much money who went and bought one just on that line and then called me to ask me if I knew where to get FarCry.....its all in the words.....

Advertising is about one thing; selling your product. If they succeed without getting sued, it's good. Giving the consumer the full picture is seldom a good idea from the companys point of view.

I like alienware stuff, id never buy a pre built system since i could do it my self that goes for any company. They've come up with some pretty revolutionary technology to : Dual PCI-E Graphics cards in a system and changeable graphics on a labtop, ok i dont know if they thought of the ideas but they are the only ones advertising them (from where ive looked any way). It wouldnt hurt if their prices came down tho

Id let him go spend his money on it then, youll only be getting phone calls every 5 minutes about "ive got virus'!" or "my computer doesnt work, i downloaded this bonzai buddy/save now/talked to this person in nigeria...".

AMD and Nvidia eh? So my Intel/ATi combo is doing something it shouldnt then? Id laugh if they actually made games to REJECT certain types of hardware: "Sorry this game cannot run on your computer until you buy an NVIDIA/AMD (auto load IE and reseller page) for the ultimate game experience... blah blah"
I dont like sig pics so i turn off sigs Which doesnt help when i dont know what ive written here! DOH!

Yeah, he kept on about it, then he told me he was gonna by a Dell because they were better so I advised him to get an Alienware. Doubt he will though, probably get a Dell with a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 for "The ultimate Far Cry experience" lol....

I think you are exagerating what he was saying in regards to alienware - I am sorry I don't believe you.
