Well the deed has been done and my order placed, I'll let you know what I think of the bits when I get my grubby hand on them

Don't forget to add your new system to the Handbrake chart Be good to see some more processors on there and the 955 is currently missing.

It looks like I was away from the forum at the wrong time!! The 990X and Phenom II X4 955BE look a solid choice.

    Re: PC dead, options?

Well I got my bits today. ordering bits from scan late on a sunday always runs the risk of stock shortage.

    Motherboard is lovely.

Hit some issues putting it together, space in the casecom 6788 is alway tight, but the position of the EPS connector on the top edge of the board means the it clashed with the top fan.
so I had to take it apart again to move the top fan outside the case.

spent ages re routing all the cables, only windows xp has other ideas. It's blue screening

    Probably a hint I show upgrade to win7 64bit.

    Re: PC dead, options?

Thank a lot Cat, I remember having to do a repair and deleting certain driver files in the past, just couldn't remember which files.

now I just have to figure out how to get the xmp profiles working to my new ram to run at the correct settings.

    Re: PC dead, options?

If you are not overclocking run it at 1333MHZ using lower latencies:

    Re: PC dead, options?

it's currently running at the jedec standard of 1333mhz cas9
    1333mhz cas7 (5.25ns) is in theory faster than 1600mhz cas9 (5.625ns)
However tht artical is rather out of date esp in terms of available ram, 1333mhz cas7 has got harder to find and more expensive.
    I did actually consider 1600mhz cas7 http://www.ebuyer.com/264747-g-skill...2800cl7d-4gbxm

The "Asus SPD information" section of the bios finds both that and the xmp setting on both sticks, but I cannot see any option in the bios to use the xmp setting, short of setting it manually.

First I need to get windows up and running, drivers installed and maybe update the BIOS before I start doing any tweeking.

must admit it's times like this I love my net book

Well AVG got screwed up so I'm having to reinstall it.
As did radio downloader . . . unless iplayer has made another change that's causing issues again.

Thats a well useful bit of info, i wish i had known about it ages ago :/ Suppose it wouldn't have mattered with this build, the amount of changes i have made are quite large so it was best of starting from fresh anyway.

I have that exact set of G-Skill ram, im having a devil of a time booting it stable at its rated timings though I think some of the other timings which are in the bios but are not shown in the usual list are different from the default ones it automatically selects.
I have been trying to find a low latency 8GB set of ram but with no luck
