Overclocking, what to do????

Hey peoples,

I have a small issue and need some input from a few people who actually know what they're talking about.

Right now my rig consist of the following:
Asrock 880G Extreme3 Socket AM3
Phenom II x6 1055t @ stock
8gb Corsair DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 XMS3 Dominator Memory CL9 (9-9-9-24)
GTX580 (soon to be 590)

My issue is that i've had a few cracks at the old overclocking malarkey and i've had no luck. At anything other than stock speeds my computer will die. I've got myself a coolermaster x6 (i think maybe) after having a look around as it was suggested to be a decent cooler. I've checked for overheating but that simply isnt the case.

Now can i blame my low end motherboard for this or is it just my poor expertise that's letting me down here?? I've heard all over the net that people have no issues at all in overclocking this chip to the same levels as its black edition brother but have had no luck pushing it up even .1ghz. lol

If the motherboard is to blame then any suggestions on a substitute. if it's just me. Maybe point me in the direction of an article or something that might help me overcome my own limitations as a noob overclocker ;)

That's a good guide to have a read through, very thorough. I don't know for sure but I think AM3/+ and AM2/+ have the same principles applied for overclocking, I'm not aware of a significant change between the two that makes any previous advice void.

Unfortunately the Hexus overclocking guides are for Intel :(

The chip isnt a black edition from what I have googled so you will need to do it with the fsb (as such). You will also need to turn your ram down to 1333 so that doesnt cause fall overs and the hyper transport bus from auto or x5 to x4 before winding up the fsb . Also check the pci-e bus is locked at 100 otherwise that will cause instant instablility. Aldo drop the multiplier on the northbridge to maintain stability.

Just wind the fsb up 15 points so 215 then 230 etc and when it falls over add a little voltage 1.4 to 1.4125 etc until its stable and then carry one just dont go above 1.5 volts.

Without telling us how you are overclocking (which steps exactly, what you're changing, and how much by) it's hard for us to tell! So what have you tried, how is it dieing/what's the error? Also what's your PSU?

i have sililar cpu, just turn ram down, or you blue screen, turn down to low setting. then up fsb 15/20 each time, once you get no boot or error add voltage with voltage once boots up fsb more, until no boot then volts agian. until u get volts to 1.5v or until wont boot at high volts,then back off a touch maybe 25 fsb from max so stable. then go ram and turn up to highest setting it will boot at.ram may actually have to be underclocked slightly.but then tighten ram timings.i am from 9-9-9-18-41 to 8-7-7-15-22 so thats about it,watch TEMPS!!!!! and stress test with oct or orthos or any stress test. watch temps and voltage.maybe up northbridge volts and multi for NB.

Which is, in my opinion a complete fluke, lol. I dont know what i've done but the OC seems stable after 6 hour stress test and no BSOD. my PSU is definately doin its job.

FYI i'm running my rig with a Corsair 850HX so as far as i'm aware its entirely capable of handling an OC ;)
