    Hi Guys,

    Just bought this Mobo for en El Cheapo system im building for my brother, what would be the fastest comaptible porcessor I could use with this board?

    Cheers

    I have spread my dreams under your feet;
    Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams.

    With the latest bios the fasest cpu you can use is the thunderbird 1.4 ghz. You have to set the bios to cpu > 1.3 to do that. Also the chip must be 200fsb dont forget, not 266!

    Any more questions ask here or pm me cos i ran this board in my main system up till 3 months ago! my mum has it now. One thing i would suggest is a case side fan blowing onto the capacitors under the socket ( or just good airflow generally) cos when they get hot (and they do) they, erm, burst. Well they did on mine. Still works though lol....

    They're not designed to support anything later than a Tbird, but my KT7A V1.0 (which is also not supposed to be able to support Athlon XPs) actually booted and worked pretty much flawlessly with a Tbred at 1.6GHz. If you can find an unlocked Tbred to experiment with you may well be able to pinmod it to get 15+ multipliers. Worth a try if you have one lying around. Running a Tbred at 100 x 20 sounds a bit daft but a lot of applications don't really demand much memory bandwidth....I know plenty of folks who run similar setups on old boards for Folding or similar.

    As long as you've got 512MB of memory it might well run fine. As far as I can see having monster bandwidth enables you to run huge framerates at low resolution, and not much else. I could be wrong though I guess.

    Thanks for giving me my first rating BTW, much appreciated.

    By the way 200fsb 1.4ghz thunderbirds are a rare as rocking horse poo, so realistically the highest will be a 200fsb 1.2ghz tbird.

    That is unless you strike lucky on ebay or something.

    as long as the voltage doesnt blow it up and the multipliers are unlocked / suitable .....i dont see a problem with what you stick in it but i may be wrong. To get suitably high multi you will need to do some joing as good old blockers says.

    What do you reckon to sticking one of the cpucity mobile tbreds in?? they are multi unlocked, oc like a champ and are only £30...... Could be the right stuff??

    Right, the problems he has are that: a) the board won't go much above 110 FSB and b) it may not even work with anything later than a Thunderbird or Spitfire. If he can get it to boot with a Palomino, Tbred or Barton, then he should be able to increase the multiplier to get a decent CPU speed as long as that processor is unlocked.

    If you go that route Scientist, I wouldn't go 'balls to the wall' with big CPU voltages and high speeds, because Abits of that era were notorious for having dodgy capacitors and it might be wise not to stress them unduly. Abit probably never intended the power supply circuitry to supply more than 70-80 watts in any case.
