The other caveat then is that if the mobo has limited overclocking, the newer quads will probably be stuck @ stock due to FSB limitations.

I always wondered why Intel never did a Celeron or Pentium Quad with an 800fsb. Perhaps the lower fsb is just too limiting for a quad core CPU...
It seems there were plans for them:
http://forums.hexus.net/pc-hardware/...ores-ahoy.html
http://forums.hexus.net/pc-hardware/...uad-q7600.html
AFAIK,it was never released.
Yes if I remember correctly the core 2 quad was just the same as the old pentium D, ie two cpu stuck on the same substrate and hidden by the ISH
It was dropped because of the release of core i and being too expensive to persue at the low end.
And again, the 8800gts 512mb was slower than the 4850 not by much but it was slower unless heavily overclocked. 650mhz core vs the 768mhz core of the 9800gtx+ or gts250 which where equal to the 4850)
For money saving, I'd say 2nd hand c2q (a q6600 should be around £70 2nd hand) and a 4870 or 4890 (around £50 2nd hand)
