Question huh?ata133 80gb maxtor drive not workin in bios?

i am fixin my boss' pc for him.he just asked me to put his new hdd in... Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB ATA-133 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-014-MD)
and it loads up the boot screen...then it says searching for primary ide drive. then it freezes.i have it set as a master but no joy. i tried puttin it in this machine and formattin it.works fine! so dunno the prob.tried settin it as a slave and lettin its old 6gb run as primary.doesnt work either. so plz any suggestions. will a 450mhz pentium 3 with 320mb sdram run a ata 133 drive?
    cheers

try disconnecting it and going into BIOS on his machine and check that it's not set to "user" for that channel - you should have the option for auto - also try removing the other 6GB HDD (if you haven't already) and use the same cable that was working with that - just to make sure the BIOS can detect it properly on its own.

Try separating the HDD onto different channels as there may be a conflict for master/slave (i.e. if both HDD's have jumpers set to Master or both to Slave).

Try a different cable (unlikely that this is the problem - but worth trying if the above doesn't work).

my mate has an old 350mhz as his second machine and he has a 40gb in it so surely a 450 would take a 80?

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...il.php?UID=116 - nearest I could find was this and it's a 6178 not a 6168. Take a look and see what you think.

    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...&NAME=Archives - here's a link the motherboard archive too.

    erm... sounds familiar, actually.

think i just sent one to the skip.

iirc there's a fixed bios, but it's in chinese only.

only other option (which i used) was a cheap ide (raid) controller card, bout 10 quid online

tell your boss to stop being so tight and upgrade it already !!!!

you'll probably flash it and kill it and then you'll get the blame on top of everything else - and he'll be forced to upgrade ... save yourself the stress and insist he needs to !

nah its cool,as the other alternative if flash kills it is to buy new mobo.nah system is pretty sweet for what it isentium 3 450mhz with 327mb sdram, if works 80gb maxtor diamondmax plus 9 80gb ata133 7200rpm 8mb cache...also asus dvd-rw and old unbranded dvd drive.

It will be a DOS prog - you'd have to boot from a floppy into DOS.

See the thread about an ATA card, I think that's your better option...
