    What!? Excessive Shock.

    Ran Hitachi's DFT (Drive fitness test) on a drive and it came back saying there was a drive defect.

    I have just run it again - wanting to zero the disc and try again before RMA (which is already authorised) and DFT now reports "0x73 - Defective Device. Excessive Shock."

    Now, sorry Hitachi, but in the space of an hour this drive has not been subjected to any more shock than when it was first installed - and I've certainly experience more shock from seeing that, than the drive ever has.

    Could it be a misreport, or are things looking bleak?

    OK, I've now sat the drive in a different location and it no longer reports excessive shock!

    This thing is a real son of a gun!

    edit: LMAO - the reported bad sectors (as reported the first time the test was run) has given me the option to fix them, or erase the disk. This time I've chosen erase instead of fix. It said "Are you sure" and I clicked yes, followed by "Are you really sure?" LOL!

    Actually, come to think of it - maybe I shouldn't have...

    Seriously though - the drive now reports error free. I'm worried though, as over the last day the DFT has reported three different errors, so I've lost faith in the drive and want a replacement. I'm just about to ring Hitachi for advice...

    edit: Hitachi have said that I should carry on using it but if there are any other problems, give them a call back.

    Let's hope...

    Fantastic! - they obviously
    1) have huge confidence in their diagnostics
    2) want to minimize their RMA claims
