    what cpu as an upgrade?(amd)

hi, i've currently got a amdxp2000+ which i can get around 2.2gig out of(runs hot and loud(aero7) then)
i'm wondering if it is worth me upgradeing my cpu just yet?
i'm looking at those mobile xp cpus the xp1500+ for £30 looks good. but i can get a 2nd hand(week or so old) xp3200+ for £70

so is it going to be worth me upgradeing to either the moblie 1500 or the xp3200(standard)?
or shall i just wait until i do a full system upgrade?

    thanks

This all depends on how much processing power you really need. A thoroughbred running at 2.2 ghz should be plenty for most apps, and if it's an upgrade for gaming, you're better off funneling that money into a video card. If you're just looking to mess around with overclocking, the XP-M 2500+ is a fun little chip. I currently have mine running at 2.7ghz with my vapochill and plan to go higher in the near future.

EDIT: The XP-M 2500+ runs for about $88 USD, whatever that comes out to in quid.

depending on how much extra i would get from the barton 3200+ ot the mobile in terms of extra mhz(i've got a aero7 and 3 fans in my case

Pretty much any Mobile will do 2.4GHz.

Imho, you'll get more out of a Mobile Barton than a desktop XP3200+ (my XP-M 2500 does 2.6GHz on air (Volcano 12) happily & at a reasonable noise level - 2.7GHz needs a bit more work & noise).

The Mobile Thoroughbred obviously has only half the cache but is cheap.

Personally if your existing CPU does 11x200 without too many complaints I would save my cash towards an AMD64 socket 939 CPU & mobo.

so having 50% more cache won't make much difference? thats why i was thinking of getting the 3200+

    thanks

I wouldn'y bother changing CPU. You can pickup a 9800Pro for £100 now so you may as well get one

About 3% over 256k at the same clockspeed.
If your going to spend £70 I would get a 1.35V XP-M 2400 (except I would really put it towards an AMD64 upgrade).

Yea, didn't really finish there. I meant it's not worth getting another 32bit CPU. As Buff says, put it towards an AM64 Upgrade.

same advice here -) one thing tho - the cache DOES make a BIG difference technically speaking, it provices the cpu with more instructions to process as it doesnt have to wait for main memory which is deathly slow compared to the cache. if you want real worlf figures the extra cache would add about the same increase as 100-200mhz of clockspeed adjustment - quite a lot =)

I've just picked up one of the 1500xpm chips... will report back later when I've actually plugged in/installed my main rig after returning from uni. Thirty squid can't really go wrong, esp upgrading from a 1ghz Tbird. Now someone show me where I can get a 9800 Pro for bang on £100 and that Microdirect Geil 512mb 3200 stick for £50 and my system upgrade is complete.
