Memory advice

I want a gig

At the moment i have 2 sticks of 256mb TwinMos 3200 winbond. I want another 512mb of ram to boost me to a gig. Do i have to buy the exact same memory as before or could i get away with a 512 stick of non winbond twinmos or a stick of crucial. 512 Twinmos winbond is quite pricey at the moment.

Would i be asking for trouble- im just thinking if its decent stuff then it should be ok right?

Or should i stop being so damn impatient and wait for ram prices to drop- my system could be on a zimmer frame by then though

Whether it's "Winbond" or not won't make any difference I shouldn't think.

What is Winbond anyway? Is it just better chips or something?

But yeah you can stick any old other 512 stick in there and it'd be fine, so I'm sure normal TwinMOS is fine.

As long as the timings are the same it shouldnt make much difference, obviously you get a slower stick and all the timings will be slow.

Might have to up the voltage on the DIMM's as some motherboards need it if you have them fully populated.

Not sure how the two memory controllers would work with that extra stick in either...

It may be worth spending the extra cash for the quiet life then. Maybe i'l sit it out until ram prices come down

winbond made BH5/6 chips which are uber clockers. Thats why people liked winbond ram

the 512mb geil ram available HERE is pretty good and also cheap. i brought a pair for my friend's pc and currently running 231fsb @ 2.5-3-3-6 stable.

Winbond makes excellent chips. If you're going to overclock your ram, it's best to have all the same types of chips for the tightest timings and highest FSB possible.

It cost me £95 for 2 sticks of 2nd hand 512Mb Twinmoss Winbond when the ram prices were lower, and that was a good deal. So a gig of geil for £110 new, with spreaders, is a great price
