At the moment i have a thermalright sk-7 heatsink with a 92mm fan on a zalman bracket thingy.I want to know will it be better putting the 120mm fan on instead of the 92mm.I'm a bit worried about noise as well.
what would be the best fan to use ?

if you want a 120mm fan and you want quiet, try the papst 120mm or the ys-tech ones, they runn pretty silent also depends on your cooling in your case no matter what size the fan if the case is warm you will just be pushing more warm air around your case
check out www.tekheads.co.uk or www.extremecooling.co.uk for the fans, maybe overclockers.co.uk but either way there is a little bit of postage to pay on them
You can find the 120mm Papst Fan here --> http://www.extremecooling.co.uk/s/pr...product=600200
or the 120mm YS-Tech here --> http://www.extremecooling.co.uk/s/pr...product=600359
hope this helps

I've already got 2 120mm papst fans ready to go in,just wondering whether it would help cool my cpu down more than a 92mm fan.

what are your case temps like atm? the one thing you will have to be careful of is fan placement, if you have exhaust fans at teh rear of the case near the cpu fan bracket then you may have a problem with the fans competing for air flow, one trying to blow air onto the cpu and the others trying to get air out the case. Best thing to do is try the fan out for an hour or two, if the temps rise you have a problem so go back to the 92mm for the cpu and use the 120's for case fans

if possible ... using those two fans together as an intake (at the front of the case) and exhaust (at the rear) could create quite a nice cooling effect over the GPU/RAM/CPU
... and might be better this way than using one directly over the CPU (those Pabst fans are pretty meaty and might not allow you to close the case side doing it that way - and might move around if not properly secured).
Mount the 120mm fan but offset it slightly to minimise the effects of the dead zone, alternately mount it with a shroud to direct the airflow onto the HS.
Ofsetting that fan can also help cool things like ram or NB too though.

yeah keep your eye open for dead spots as these will just become pockets of hot air which wont help in the old case cooling best way to check it is get a canister of compressed air (about a quid - that stuff they sell you to clear dust from your case) and when the fans are running squirt it once you will see the vapour of the spray travel through the case and you will see exactly where your airflow is going very handy for mounting fans to see where the best places are to put them

the case i've bought has been modded for watercooling so i can fit one 120mm easily on the back as an exhaust.I was going to use the other on my cpu instead of the 92mm.This is the actual case i bought. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...eadid=17235190 Schroll down a bit and it shows you.
I have to switch cases yet,so i was just getting advice before i swop

Thats a good tip Grey M@a nice one.

Works a treat to, you can pick up that compressed air at most places, DIY stores, maplins etc Halfords do it, only a quid for the unbranded stuff but air is air at the end of the day. Also great for getting dust out of the huge sinks like the Swiftech ones I used, saves you having to take out the whole Mobo to unmount the heatsink

great idea though matey!
Would mounting a 120mm with the 120->80mm adapter (these were £1.25 from ebuyer a while back but no longer in stock) rid you of your dead zone?

I've thought of that one as well. There's no screw mounts on my heatsink and i doubt the dodgy wire clamps would be strong enough to keep all that weight up.It should do in theory.it should cool alot better, shouldn't it?Originally Posted by silentphoenix

The only problem is the air pressure makes extra noise when reducing 120 -> 80 (well not the pressure but the effects of it, you know what I mean).
