Strange PS3 to computer conversion question?
Okay, i know this maybe shouldnt be in this forum but im not too sure where this question should go.
I have a very old PS3 60gb, the original ones. I have maybe played on it 20 times or so as it was a gift and i already had an xbox, so i didnt really use the PS3 (i know i should have sold it on, but i thought i may use it), well its been sitting in my attic for a few years now untouched. I went to play on it and the blu ray drive doenst read the discs anymore. So i wanted to know, as its not really sellable as its so old and i wont get much for it, if i can turn it into a computer.
I will probably need to use an external harddrive and diskdrive. But is this a viable option, right now it just sits in my attic and collects dust. I want to salvage it somehow so it can be of use.

Surely if the PS3 is on a firmware version <= 3.15 then he can install OtherOS without any jailbreaking/etc* If you're on 3.21+ you're SoL going the official route and currently if you're on 3.73 you're entirely SoL at the moment.
* though perhaps you'd be needing the Bluray drive to install YDL or whatever flavour Sony allowed you to run?

I dont think there should be any issues but have asked for a Mod to step in to give some feedback about whether this topic can be discussed here - from my understanding it should be fine; if this post had been made 2 years ago I dont think there would be any issue, and considering the PS3 is on an old firmware there's no need to venture into any of the murkier areas :)
Re: Strange PS3 to computer conversion question?
If it is the original 60Gb with PS2 backwards compatibility you might be surprised how much you can sell it for

It is indeed that one, but the problem i have is that i am in the UK and the PS3 was bought in the US, so not many people want to buy it. Also, the blu ray drive doesn't read the discs anymore, everything works fine except its main purpose, reading a disc to play a game, it just doesn't work.
so since it had just been collecting dust, i thought there might be someway to turn it into a decent pc. but i guess not, as i found out it only has 256 mb RAM, which its that fast and apparently you cant upgrade it.
Re: Strange PS3 to computer conversion question?
If the PS3 hasn't been upgraded to or past the point of OtherOS removal there is no problem discussing getting Linux/etc on it.
Only trouble is without a working bluray drive it's rather pointless, and in actual fact is rather pointless anyway given that with the official route the hypervisor hobbles the machine to such an extent it's almost completely unusable anyway - no hardware acceleration, and it's *slow* - really slow, slower than a really slow thing swimming through treacle, one handed, and only kicking with one foot.
Make of that what you will, lol
I'd suggest ebaying it for parts - someone might be able to make use of it. On the other hand a replacement drive is ~£30-60 if you fancy giving the official linux route a try... (and giving yourself an exercise in patience...)
Re: Strange PS3 to computer conversion question?
I wonder why the blu-ray stopped working...
Re: Strange PS3 to computer conversion question?
Lol I loved that Stoo!
Have you tried a blu-ray laser cleaner? Could just be a build up of dust if its been sitting for a while??
Re: Strange PS3 to computer conversion question?
If you end up scrapping it I'd be interested in the motherboard
