    laptop problem

    Hi all,
Just got back from a college ski trip in the alps and it would appear my laptop is damaged. It is basically crushingly slow, and will eventually get to the desktop but doesn't enjoy the journey there. Its a Lenovo g770 that's only a couple of months old, and im inclined to think its not a virus because it worked for a week without internet access, then worked ok when it came out of hibernation but sort of crashed while playing a film a couple of times and since i rebooted it its been problematic. It didn't take a knock as such but obviously a bus journey of more than 500 miles could have played a part. I reckon the hard drug is failing since its taking incredibly long amounts of time to perform basic tasks, all quite read write intensive. Any tips on what to do to isolate the problem? Could it be bad memory?

Thanks a lot for any advice

    Nick

First things first though, run chkdsk from the command line, as it is your boot drive it will likely want to do a check at boot rather than there and then, but that can usually catch most of the causes of a hard drive failing, also you might want to get crystal disk info, and look to see if you have any SMART attributes that are at or below the threshold, as that can also be an indicator of a failing drive.

Not sure that I'll get to the command line tbh, it's that bad. Safe to say it's just a failing hard drive?

sounds that way, if you can pop it out, and plug it into another pc to do the scans, you won't need a converter or anything as laptop drives use the same sata cables as desktop drives these days.

    Re: laptop problem

My gf's laptop did this all of a sudden, then it stopped charging! No idea what caused it but your not alone!

Thinking about it though, HDD may be the issue! Have you dusted all the vents thoroughly? At the same time as hers started playing up it also started getting very hot, i'm going to pull it apart tonight and check the fans etc

2 months old! Must be under warranty, send it back without tinkering (as that might void the warranty)

Lenovo are usually great with warranty too, shouldn't be a problem

    Re: laptop problem

does the hdd light keep flashing when it is going slow? If not, then the hard drive should be ok.
Memory problem usually causes blue screen and restart but not slow computing.

I think the problem might be related to your GPU drive (not the hardware) if you met crash during watching films.

    Re: laptop problem

i would have thought levono would do an up and running service like toshiba do, we arrive with a identical laptop and swap hdd's if its a hardware fault so the customer has a usable laptop while its off for repair, if its a dead hard drive we swap for a good one and close the call (you get a fresh windows install as its your problem to backup as with anything)

You get that with Lenovo Thinkpads only, i have "5 years onsite next business day warranty" on my T400

They fix it onsite the same day
