Need to replace Internal DVD Drive. Should I go BD

As per title, my internal DVD drive is playing up and I need to replace it. Was wondering about getting a BD player (or writer) - what are peoples thoughts and if you think I should what would you recommend and why?

    Thanks folks.

Re: Need to replace Internal DVD Drive. Should I go BD

I bought one when I was building my HTPC. For the negligible difference in price, I thought it was worth doing.

That said, I don't think I've even put a BluRay in the thing yet - quicker to use the PS3 that is beside it.

Mine was this one from Scan - http://www.scan.co.uk/products/samsu...yer-retail-box

Re: Need to replace Internal DVD Drive. Should I go BD

Its probably worth going the BD-ROM(with DVD-RW capabilities) route if you don't already have a means of BD and are interested in it - the price isn't much more i don't think.

Re: Need to replace Internal DVD Drive. Should I go BD

If you're replacing an optical drive anyway, it's worth considering. As far as I can see, however, the price differential between BluRay combo drives and BluRay writers means they aren't worth getting - if you're spending the extra you may as well get a BluRay writer.

The real question then becomes is it worth £50 extra to have the capability of reading / writing blurays on the off chance that you might want to. And since that's a personal value question, I think you're the only one who can answer it...

Yes, but only BD-Rom as trebinator advised.

Unless you've found some much cheaper BD-ROM/DVD-RW combo drives that I have, I don't see the point. You can get a BD writer for ~ £60, and I can't find a BD reader (let alone a combo drive) for less than £40. I'd rather pay the relatively small extra outlay to have the capability to write to BD at that point...

Have to say, this makes me very reminiscent of my old PC building days when the default was to put separate DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives in every machine I built

Re: Need to replace Internal DVD Drive. Should I go BD

I agree with Scary .... more or less.

On the basis that DVD writers are, what, £15-ish, and BD writers nearly £70, the question is, will you write BDs?

For me, the answer to that is yes, because the capacity is useful for data storage.

As for playing BD discs (as in movies) that interests me not at all, so I wouldn't, personally, pay £5 extra for that, let alone the increase from £15-ish to £40, much less £65-70.

So, for me, the answer is that it'd be either a cheap DVD drive or a BD writer, depending on which machine it was for.

But the real answer is in the "personally" bit. It depends what you will use it for now, or in the next year or two. There's no point paying £40 for what you can get for £15 if you'll never use the BD functions. So .... will you?

Re: Need to replace Internal DVD Drive. Should I go BD

Didn't realise the combo ones were that much more than normal BD-ROM drives.

If you're still interested in the BD route however, someone on here must have a DVD drive for sale surely? Maybe give the Wanted section a look?

Ah. Bit of a problem, there.

    Okay, how this :-

Option 1) Buy a BD player.

Options 2) Buy a DVD player.

If you go for 2), you pay £15, and if you're wrong and need to write BDs, you'll buy a writer, and have paid £15 for a second drive in the machine that can always act as a backup, or to assist in disc copying.

So worst case, you pay an extra £15 for that capability. Best case, though, you've saved £50 by not buying a BD writer you didn't need or use.

Now for 1). Best case, you use BDs but haven't spend the extra £15, but also, don't have a backup drive. Worst case, you wasted £50 you could have spend on something else.

So .... how important is that wasted £50? If it's trivial, then it doesn't matter. If it's not, why waste it?

Same argument applies to a BD reader, but not so much, unless you want to watch BD movies on your PC. I discount that one personally, as I wouldn't do that if you paid me. (*)

(*) Well, paid any realistic amount, anyway. If you paid enough to make Bill Gates wince, I might.

Got a LiteOn BD player (daughters friends are always bringing round films to watch and as we dont have a BD player hooked up to the TV I thought it would solve a problem). Appreciate all the input guys.
