    NF7-S problems :(

Some may remember I was asking if my temps were fine on my mobo, but now that is the least of my worries.

I was due to do my final install of XP (after months of changing my rig), and tested the system to about 6 hrs stable on prime so nowt would go wrong. Downloaded all the latest drivers onto my other partion ready for the fresh install.

    Problem 1

Bunged in the XP Pro CD, format, install and freeze - always on the '34 minutes remaining' mark! I also tried a copy of XP Home to see how that'd cope and again after '34 minute' remaining it'ss just freeze.

    Problem 2

Ok, so i thought perhaps my system wasnt as stable as I thought, so i bumped it down to 2.2Gig @ 1.7 volts which I am more than 100% sure is perfectly stable, and still he same problem at the 34th minute reamining. Then loaded all the original settings (11x166 @ 1.45v) ad the problem dint go away. On this, i thought perhaps I might have changed something in the bios that causing the problem, so I set failsafe defaults and F10'ed saved and watched it restart....... and nothing happened.

I switched it off and on again and the "Do not reset the computer.. blah blah ..bios flashing in progress.. blah blah" screen was up, and then it reset.... and nothing.

Did the same as before (switched it off and on again) but this time nothing happened. Im not sure if the bios is bust since it still responds to the 'hold down for 5 seconds' off thing, but I didnt beep when I didnt have any RAM in it. Ive tried clearing the CMOS, removing the battery and switching off my PSU (in various combinations and about 10 - 20 minutes before a retry). I had a similar problem to this when i used to overclock my old RAM to much, and that was remedied by placing the mobo on the metal side of the case - i picked that up from nforcershq forums on recommendation for the Asus a7n8x deluxe - but that did not work this time.

If anyone has any answers to either problem, I'd really appreciate any feedback - thanks in advance

First of all whenever you install windows always do it at defaults. It's then assured that the install will be done right.

As for the not booting have you tried holding down the insert button? Also are there any sirens or beeping noises?

Thanks for the replier guys - much appreciated

Panzar - No, i didnt try installing the SATA drivers - ive left my comp in a clear CMOS overnight so will give it ago as soon as I get round problem 2!

Efaill - Will take note of that next time mate. I'll try do the insert thing you mention, but there arent any sirens that go off when you swith it on - even when it doesnt have any RAM in it which is strange, which made me think i blew the bios, but saying that it still responded to the 'hold the off for 5 seconds' and it switches off.

I do believe the 5 second rule is just based on a sort of latching circuitry - doesn't seem to have anything to do with whether the BIOS is pooched or not.

    Angry

ok i'm a little lost mate, i also have the NF7 S V.2 about a week ago it just stoped POSTING i tryed everything and nothing would get it to work. Scan have got it back now and they have confirmed its not posting (hehehe), so anyway i'll be getting me new one back on monday.

I also had an older abit m/b befor i went for this, new NF7 S V.2 the old m/b also stoped posting after about 9 months old.

So is your m/b posting at all or are you having the same problem as i got, the last thing my m/b did befor it gave up was the black screen with the red wrighting saving to the bios do not power off..... or what ever it says.

I also have a problem with you "placing the mobo on the metal side" that cant be good mate not with full power going into it anyway, you said before you get no bleeps at all even with no "RAM" in. Thats what was also going down for me it looks to me like you m/b like my one has said "CANNY TAKE IT NO MORE CAPTIAN!".

I also forgot to say my mate had the same older m/b as what i had and sure enuff his did the same thing, at the same age i really do think they are easy to mess up.

The only thing i can think of is sending it back to the place you got it from to see if they can sort it for you.

    Thanks Kez and CarzyHarry .

Ive just given it another go, and no improvements since yesterday

I also have a problem with you "placing the mobo on the metal side" that cant be good mate not with full power going into it anyway
I only put it on the metal side of the case when it was dompletely disconnected - has worked in the past when I pushed my old RAM over the limit and it didnt post anymore (but then it would beep when there was no RAM in the slots). I picked up the tip from nforcershq on the Asus forum - it was just that clearing cmos on the a7n8x d was meant to take ages, but by seating it on fiol it'd do it instantly-ish.

As for RMA's well, it was bought on the 6th June 2003 so im out of luck i geuss. Was wondering if there was anything else I could do before I give up on it. I was thinking maybe getting the bios chip reflashed (i think someone has done something like this on this forums before by cant remember who) and see if that has any affect.

    Any suggestions?

[edit] Anyone notice the change in my sig?

I can do this for you - I think that Agent does it for peeps too.

As for the 1 year thing I'm pretty certain that ABIT's warranty is longer than 1 year anyway & even then it is reasonable to expect a mobo to have a longer life than 1 year & therefore it would be covered under 1 of the Sale of Goods Acts.
