CPU: I would go down to a 2.8C to save £25, with only a small performance loss (that can probably be recovered with overclocking). Might also be worth considering Athlon 64s, or wait and see how Socket 939 pans out.

Graphics: I would just go for a 9800 pro. It's nearly as good as the 9800XT, much cheaper (like at Scan.co.uk) and, again, can be overclocked so that it reaches and even exceeds 9800XT speeds. It might also be worth it to wait for the new generation of cards to become more affordable, depending on how long you want to wait and whether you want the cutting edge.

aye i was first going to get a p4 2.4 procc and overclock, could defo go for a 2.8 .
Ii cant see the x800 etc becoming afordable to me for ages (until the pci-e range are out) and i just cant wait much longer, was hoping the x800 to get out on the market properly by now, but its all pre-orders etc :/ and this isnt bringing the 9800xt down at all i would go for a 9800 pro 256 but they not much cheeper than the 9800 xt

I find that most 9800XTs are a fair bit more expensive. Like I said, they can be overclocked fairly easily to 9800XT speeds, while saving a few pounds.
Probably the best value for money graphics card around at the moment.

the 3.0C pentium is the best value for money. If you are not going to overclock getting a PC4000 wouldnt be necessary. If you are then your 3.0C should reach 3.6GHz quite easily.

Dont bother getting the 9800XT. If you are on a budget then get the 9800Pro, if not the X800 pro would be a better investment

I agree, I've built systems using cheap Connect Rad 9800 pro's & they'v all clocked over & above XT speeds with only the addition of a cheapo Arctic cooler.

cool im planning on overclocking the cpu, hench the crazy ass ram .

I no the radeon 9800 256 model would easily clock to xt speeds, but dident think the 128 would, but if it will with a arctic cooler then thats sweet.

atm im looking to find the 2 sata hds for £100 instead of £130 anyone seen any offers?

    That Radeon 9800 is a 128bit not a 256bit, so nowhere near as quick as a 9800XT!
    The situation's looking...

You might get lucky with the drives if you hunt out an independant components supplier. Check the local papers or the Yellow pages for samll guys... a shop local to me sold me two WD 120gig SATAs for £130 for the pair... its well worth having a good look around.

Failing that, why not get one SATA drive now, then get another later when funds allow? Apart from the pain of doing a re-install, (which aint that bad), you wont have so much to back up that it'll not fit onto a CD...or slap a bog standard IDE drive in there purely while you re-install... 's what I've got in my system.

No, its a 256bit 128Mb & the latest cards seem to be coming with the R360 core & clock to XT speeds.

Hmm when I've looked most 128MB are 128bit cards, retailers seem to try and hide the memory interface information which isn't on! I'm sure most people are aware they should avoid the 128bit variant now anyway.

yeah Deckard thats a good idea, i have a 80 gb ata drive which is a pure backup drive (all my programs, songs , work etc etc) so formating isnt that big a deal.

kool chiyau but thats an ATA drive buddy, not a SATA, but if i do go for the radeon 9800 pro 128, i can aford the £130 price for the 2 sata drives now, im just scared ill get it and it wont clock that much.

    hmmmm de hmmmmm
