    Barton XP2500 and Prime

    Howdy Guys

I have a wee problem with a Barton xp2500 I threw into my system yesterday. When I run Prime 95 on it after a minute it fails with HARDARE FAILURE error.

The ram is fine as I primed it for ages with a XP2600 Tbread in it oc'd to 2250mhz.

The CPU is a AQUCA 0308 and is currently 11 x 200 2205mhz. The temps are idle 37-39'c and load 43'c. Current BIOS voltage on my NF7s is 1.7v and MBM reports the voltage as 1.66v.

The machine can run 3dmark 2001 on a constant loop for 2hrs solid with no problems.

    Any ideas folks?

Depends what the stepping of the chip is - I can get my Barton to hit 2.2GHz, upping the volts, but it's only prime stable for about a minute too. Mine maxes out at 2.04GHz stable, but it's not one of the wonder clockers.

Up the voltage. I've not seen too many Bartons that can be stable at 2.2 with 1.65 Volts
Keep an eye on your temps though

I wouldn't break the 2V barrier. Have heard of plenty of people who do though and no reports of sudden Barton death yet.

For what it's worth I have an XP1700+ running @ 2.1GHz (9.5 x 220) and it needs 1.9V to get there stable. Any higher than that any prime 95 craps out in short order - I can't raise the voltage any higher without doing any vmods (BIOS tops out a 1.85V but MBM reports actual is 1.9V).

I'd be fairly confident that yours can be made stable with a bit more juice. Just try adding 0.05 volts first - no need to fry it.

If all your games run fine and you get no issues then leave it. There would just be the nagging thought in the back of my head that it could go tits up and take all my hard earned gameplaying with it.

I've been lucky.I bought a 2500xp just as they were discovered to be unlocked. It can do 11x204 on stock 1.65v.I wouldn't put more than 1.8v through my cpu but thats just 'cos i'm on air cooling and i don't like my temps above 50c.It will also do 10.5x228 with 1.9v but my temps went up to 58c idle which is to hot for me.I wouldn't be to worried as long as your pc is running ok.If its not crashing etc when in use i wouldn't worry to much.download prime from somewhere else as you may just have a bugged download or something.(happened to me with aquamark)Keep a close eye on your temps though.
What bios version have you got installed?

It's down to you at the end of the day. For my 2p I don't believe a system is truly stable unless it can pass several hours of prime 95 torture - when I'm limit finding I even leave it running overnight to make sure. The trade off between temp and max clocks is an issue too - though with a good air cooler (and good case ventilation) you can still stick the juice up quite far before it's an issue. I still have good idle temps (36c as I type this) and that's with a Zalman CNPS 7000A AlCu with the fan at full RPMs (no speed controller connected), AS5 between the heatsink and CPU, 2 80mm intake fans and 2 80mm exhausts (no filter on the intakes but a fairly restrictive grill). Having said that my load temps go up fairly high - low to mid 50's usually - with just the CPU loaded - if I load the GFX card and CPU it gets a bit hotter (simply becuase the case does - the Radeon 9800SE I have might only have half the pipelines of a full 9800 Pro but it still kicks out a scary amount of heat)
