Gaming mice question.

I'm currently looking at buying myself a new mouse. Now its main use will be
gaming and then the rest is bog standard browsing and a rare bit of word
processing.
Now I know a mouse is a personal choice so I'll tell you what games I play
and what I do want from a mouse. I have read reviews and tried a couple of
mates mice but all that has done is make it a tad more confusing.
I mainly play FPS and RPG games. For example I'm currently playing way too
much bf3 and skyrim. I dabble in Rts and strategy games. The only thing
worth mentioning is I will most likely be hopping on the Guildwars 2
bandwagon as I loved guildwars 1, but no mmo action other than that is
planned.
As for the mouse itself there are only 2 features I really want. I want on the fly
adjustable dpi and I want to be able to comfortably use both a claw and palm
grip.
Now where I'm confused is what I should buy. I've looked around and there
are a few products that spring to mind. For example the Rat 7 looks
interesting. I also like the look of razers mice however I hear that the lovely
coating on them tends to wear off quickly. I have had a go with a friends
logitech g9 x and quite liked that too.
Anyway sorry for the really long post. Any advice from people with firsthand
experience of everyday use of a mouse that fits my needs would be great.
If anyone needs more info just ask.

The logitech MX518 was the one-stop-solution in days gone by. It is now superseded by the G400, available for £25 from scan, which while slightly different in appearance, has the same ergonomic shape and useful gaming functionality. I use two MX518 and will be ordering the G400 for my next build.

Yea i have a MX518 as well but sometimes i lose "connection" . i get that sound as if the usb was unplugged on the mice

I got tired of trying different mice. The last was a gigabyte GM-M6900 I picked up on play. Ergonomically ok but the left click button kept squeaking and creaking, like the sound a tired or ill fitted spring. As you can probably tell, it got pretty annoying.

Before that I had a generic and apparently robust windows unit. Lasted me about a year before it failed and I dont even game that much.

With my impending new rig I'm getting a razer deathadder. It's pretty pricey but at circa £40, but I wanted to sort it out once and sort it out right. Tried my mate's one and it genuinely felt like a really robust and quality made bit of kit. Unlike the plastic-y offerings from gigabyte and Windows.

Having said that, after the windows and the gigabyte units I've been using a budget laser asda's £2.99 special with my macbook for work. it's not pretty but it's been utterly reliable I guess it's a question of whether you can bring yourself to spend so much on a mouse but I intend on getting into gaming much more and hopefully this little indulgence will last me for years to come.

you are the only person I've ever heard have a problem with the MX518, but each to their own. I reckon you must have a dud one. You should use their guarantee and return it. The other possibility is that the fault lies with the machine - have you tried using a different USB port?

No, crap USB port on your computer. Won't be the mouse (try a different computer all together. If it is, send it back to logitech for a free replacement).

So how does the g500 compare to the mx518? I've asked this question on another forum and logitech gets universal reccomendations. Cheers for the replies guys.

Different kinds of mice. The g500 is the all singing gamer mouse - memory, weights etc. Some people rate it well, but so many people preferred the older mx518 that logitech released the g400 for them - I'd go for the g400 over the g500.

I get the same with my G5 too. I usually use the USB ports on my G11 or G15 and it happens sometimes during games and the same happens with the motherboards when the mouse is plugged into them. I then tried plugging the mouse direct into the motherboard USB ports and the same thing happens sometimes and the keyboard is fine.

TBH, I simply didn't know about the g400 or 500! Just checked it out and the razer's much sleeker looking.

The razer mice do look really nice. However looking nice doesn't matter to me that much. Usability, reliability and the way it feels are much more important to me. Seeing as the razer mice tend to cost more I'd need to be convinced that the bump in price is worth it.
