    Question Quiet DVD Drive

    Hi guys

I while back I purchased Shuttle's RefleXion system, and as much as I love it, the bundled DVD drive is very loud. Usually such things don't bother me, but the overall system noise level means the speakers often get drowned out unless turned right up.

Sooo ... I'm thinking of purchasing Shuttle's SilentX PSU, and a new DVD drive. I'd therefore be grateful for any recommendations you may have for quiet DVD drives. I'm not too bothered about it being a DVD burner, just so long as it's relatively quiet during general operation.

    Thank you in advance

I had a 16speed LiteOn that was very quiet, and the 52*52*32*16 CDRW/DVD combo ive got now is good as well. Loudish for the first few seconds as it spins up, then quiet when its reading. Also, a decent performer as well, quick off the blocks.

This one, and for £35, quite a bargain.

Thanks THCi, that looks great. I might have to spray it black, but otherwise that looks like a good deal (and a good price too).

If anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know

    Thanks again

I've also got a Lite-On dvd. Never even thought about the noise it made, so I guess it's pretty quiet...

Lite-On drives also seem to be physically shorter than most others - ideal for the cramped confines of a Shuttle.
    All effort is useless

Yeah, thats something that I never think about now, because Ive only ever bought standalone drives from LiteOn.

That sounds perfect The RefleXion has the mesh grill case which tends to let out more sound, but it does look rather nice and aids cooling.

Thanks once again for the advice

    Nero Drivespeed

I have a Pioneer 106s slot loading DVD.

I found a link on some forums somewhere for a utility especially for the drive to choose the speed. So you could slow it down to make it quieter if you needed to and speed it up if you where copying a big file or installing something. The DVD drive only needs to be going at 1X speed to play a film which is what I'm assuming you want to do.

There is a utility that comes with Nero 6 called Nero Drivespeed that sits in the system tray and lets you choose the drive speed on the fly. This works with all drives as far as I know which might save you some money.

Its a free download as well I think just google it.

Thanks Stoo, I guess I overlooked the obvious!

As for that idea, sijol, I'll give it a whirl as it sounds like a great solution.

    Thanks once again
