now then...
Can I just clarify my understanding of the Hammerline up before I go any further.
Opteron: 1x 2x and 8x, requires EEC ram, Dual channal, 940 pins
Athlon 64 1x, normal DDR, single channel, 754 pins (or somewhere near!)
AthlonFX This is the unknown quantity! (at least to me!)
Initianally (sp) 940 pins, remarked opteron as above but only 1x
Then Q1 2004 1x, dual channel, 939 pins
The question is does this require EEC ram?
The way I see it the AthlonFX is the one to buy it will be faster than the opteron by using normal DDR and will be a lot cheaper to produce a system.
I belive not introducing a dual channel "hammer", this year, that uses normal ram may be AMDs biggest mistake in the enthusiast market.
They have a clear opertunity (sp) to take, by a clear lead, the performance crown and get a lot of marketing coverage, but if it relies on EEC ram its a paper win.
Agree? disagree? have info on AthlonFXs memory requirements?
BTW the current poll on the front page does not include the AthlonFX, I realise its not official but this is the chip most of the Hexus readers should be wanting :-)

well said...ECC ram? i thought thats slower for ppls like us :)
-
LOL sorry, I've done this before, EEC, showing my age, thats the euro economic community.
I obviously meant ECC but it just doesn't roll off the tongue! :-)
-
AthlonFX will have dual DDR memory without the need for ECC memory.
Don't think I'll buy the Athlon 64, I'll be waiting for the AthlonFX if anything cuz I just bought an athlon xp 2500 so I'll wait till after xmas for some new cpu power :)
-
Well i just upgraded to Athlon XP 2500+ too, and i generaly wait 2 years before upgrade, so I will probably go for the 7Ghz Athlon 128FX :D

Care to post some links?
Do you belive the first AthlonFX will not be a rebadged Opteron then?
Or are you assuming we will not see athlonFX until Q1 2004?
I think this is the chip enthusiasts want, but will we have to wait until next march?
I might buy a dual opteron by then!

Heres a link to a story on the INQ,
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10954
It may not all be correct and contains quite a bit of speculation but this is the general story circulating most hardware sites.

lol good article...espically when they diss "Leet Haxor" lol...i would like 2 see a intel engineer actually read that and see if he understands it...then test him on his abc
