Something has been bugging me..... Help!

Not really your usual question but I've wondered this for sometime now. Why do all of the GPU manufactures spend so much time designing and developing these really beautiful enclosures for use to admire but then when we get the GPU we install it in to our computer "upside down" and get to admire the rather ugly PCB. In fact the same goes for the new Soundcard I just bought!!

Maybe it's the medication I'm on..... Or maybe been stuck here in bed not able to do anything and slowly going insane but does anyone know "Why" they do this??

It's just to mess with your head.
    (and it's working....)
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

ATX? specification. Originally the case would be lain horizontally, so it wasn't up/down, just left/right so they chose one to standardise. Then people starting using them in tower orientation and the left became down.

Some cards breach ATX spec, but most try to stick to it.

(presumably it's not actually ATX spec, but early ISA which then set a standard followed by PCI and PCIe etc.)

You just need one of them weird right side upside down mobo cases. Then you could look at the nice side of cards.

Mrs Rookie suggests I fit a mirror along the bottom of the case so I can see the "pretty" side of the enclosure...... She's full of useful ideas

I know you mention that in ye old PC days that the case would have been lay flat but come on! My first Intel Pentium 1 PC was a tower so it's not like the manufactures haven't had enough time to adapt to the difference in case format.

Probably just because people buy things that look nice. Personally I do not like towers with windows. I don't want to look at what is inside I just want it to perform well.

You could always make yourself a scratch build case out of clear acrylic if you're that bothered about looking at the internals of your computer (personally I've always been more interested in looking at the output on the monitor, but whatever floats your boat... )

Whoa, back the bus up a moment, before people get carried away here. I never said that I prefer to look at the inside of my PC over the monitor.... All I was saying is that isn't it strange that they spend all that time and money designing an enclosure that once its installed no one gets to see??

You can buy a different format if you want to, so yes, they've had plenty of time and they have produced different formats. But if you're asking why a particular standard hasn't changed.. well the clue is in the word standard Nothing stopping you from using a different one though

I think Intel tried to create 'BTX' back in 2004/5-ish, I had an old dell where everything was the right way up and the CPU was right next to the intake at the front. It made for low(er) temperatures on the 'Prescott' CPUs.

    OR turn your case upside-down

Maybe you'd get marginally lower temps on your CPU and GPU that way too, if the GPU is no longer venting heat upwards towards the CPU.

Upsidedown case, mirrors inside, remote cam feeding monitor.
Why didn't I think of that? Now that's real getto beta enganeering.
