Whats the Thorton all about then? Is it the mobile xp? I havent heard of this before

A Thorton is a crippled Barton core with half the cache disabled to make it effectively a thoroughbred, similar to the new Durons which are crippled thoroughbreds.
They basically do it to phase out the need for producing two different cores.
A lot of people have had good success with re-enabling the missing cache, thus turning them back into a Barton

So whats the best mobo to use with these mobile athlons, and also could i use one in a small form factor pc like a shuttle or a aopen cube which i want to use as a media centre pc for the living room.

Best mobos to use are anything with an nForce2 chipset, the ASUS A7N8X or ABIT NF7 seem to be the favorites. VIA chipsets don't detect mobiles properly and you have to do a pinmod to access the correct multipliers.
Don't see why you couldn't stick one in a shuttle
