Does anyone know a site that has all the processor speeds listed with their numbers? (eg. 2000+ (my current) = 1.67GHz, 2100+ =...)

Also can anyone tell me why the 2800 is slower than the 2700?

At a guess, the 2800 is a Barton. This means it has 512kb of cache and an FSB of 166, while the 2700 is probably a Thoroughbred, so it has less cache and a lower FSB (133). So in order to reach the same sort of speeds, then the Thoroughbred has to have a higher clockspeed, although overall it is slower.

The 2800 is slower than the 2700 because the 2800 is a Barton core (512k l2 cache) and the 2700 is a thoroughbred core (256k l2 cache).

Which in real terms means that althought the actual clock speed of the 2800 is lower than the 2700 it is actually faster in most things.

The FSB of Thorougbreds is 133, while Bartons are 166, apart from the 3200+ and some 3000+s, which have an FSB of 200.

What exactly are you looking for in a CPU? Most of the people here on Hexus can probably help you if you tell us what you want.

i want a cpu that i can afford, as well as a radeon 9800pro and new harddisk. needs to be able to run games faster than a 2000+ thing, that runs like a 1600+.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, buy a 2400+ mobile CPU from CPUCity and set it to 3200+ speeds, although we would have to know what motherboard you are using as they don't work great on everything.

my motherboard is an asus a7n8x deluxe. why a mobile one, and how come it would work @ 3200+ speeds?

The mobile processors are hand picked because they work at a lower voltage, hence they are the king of overclocking chips.
A 2400+ mobile will probably do 3200+ speeds on less voltage than a 3200+ will.
It will also go way beyond those speeds(mine does 2.5GHz rock solid, a 3200+ is 2.2Gig)
The reason I asked about the mobo is that mobile CPUs tend to be a bit tricky on VIA chipsets. Since yours is an nForce2 chipset it will work fine(I used to have that board and they work very nicely)

As for the other it is what is known as "overclocking" - basically you tell the CPU to be something that it isn't by default.

no matter what the clock speed, they all go up in sequence, even if a xp2800 is slower, than a xp2700, on performance ratios, itll still be slightly better

the best buy currently is probably the XP2400m as mentioned, cheap, barton core, and overclocks like a cheetah on speed, XP3200 is common and maybe more, if you wsnt a CPU on the cheap, thats where to shop

slightly better, apprently is the XP2500m, which costs a bit more, but hit 2.5ghz often, and good steppings have been known to hit 2.6-2.7ghz, all depends on what you can afford, the XP2400M is probably your best bet, available from www.cpucity.com
