UPS & HomeServers - who uses one?
Evening guys,
Does anyone use a UPS system on their homeserver, and if so, what do they use? Just thinking that is perhaps the main weakness of my setup at the moment, as the backups are reliant on the power remaining on!
It is only a HP Microserver with a couple of drives (could possibly run the switches off it too - backup is to a local USB drive though), so my understanding is I wouldn't need something huge?
Any suggestions/recommendations/thoughts would be appreciated :)
Re: UPS & HomeServers - who uses one?
I have a Smart-UPS 750 powering a Netgear DG834GT, Alix 2C3, media converter and a MicroServer with an Adaptec 3405 RAID controller, ILO card, 4xHDD and 1xSSD.
The load on the UPS is 17.5% with an estimated total runtime of 56 minutes.
There's a seller called ups-trader on ebay who sells APC Smart-UPS units (don't get the beige ones) with OEM batteries that are probably of equal quality to UPS's own brand batteries.
I also have another Smart-UPS 750 powering my main desktop (see system info), a 24port switch, VPN router and a CCTV DVR. This UPS has a 32.5% load but the battery needs replacing & will probably only last around 10 minutes.
Re: UPS & HomeServers - who uses one?
I'm guessing the beige ones are Serial only versus the black ones being USB equipped?
Re: UPS & HomeServers - who uses one?
I've got an APC Back-UPS 650VA supplying my HP Microserver, Buffalo router and gigabit switch with 40mins of backup.
EDIT: Would like to add, I went for this £85 UPS because it's relatively cheap!

TBH I've also wondered about having a UPS for my fileserver, just for a controlled shutdown if nothing else. This could be a stupid question but - how efficient are these (UPS in general)? just wondering if its going to suck a heap of electricity (after its charged)?
Re: UPS & HomeServers - who uses one?
Wikipedia says 90% efficiency in a lot of cases. On-line UPSes are less efficient than the most common line-interactive variety. Efficiency will vary depending on quality & type of UPS though.
Re: UPS & HomeServers - who uses one?
I don't, purely because I remember at work having to buy a new battery for an APC unit. I don't mind the upfront cost, but the ongoing as well... can't afford that.

We don't need a big UPS for an HP Microserver so maintenance costs will be pretty low :P. For example, an APC branded replacement battery for my APC 650VA UPS will set me back £30 delivered. I don't suffer many power failures so I should get at least 3 years out of a battery, £10 per year maintenance is good value IMO.
Alternatively, I could go for a standard off-the-shelf battery instead - the same thing without the APC logo for £15.

Ah okay, that's pretty good then. The one I bought was over £100 which gave me a bit of a shock, never looked into it after that. Is there a rough conversion guide for W -> VA then?

It depends on your equipment but power factors between 0.7 to 0.6 are commonly used by UPS manufactures, i.e. multiply your VA figure by 0.7 to get power in Watts or divide your Wattage by 0.7 to get power in VA.

if you have gas only central heating this is never a problem :D
On topic, I have a 1 PC next to my cable connection that spends half it's time off, so don't really see the point of a UPS for that, and my main PC is in a different room, so wouldn't be able to put that in the same UPS.
I'm of the opinion that this is where laptops /netbooks are more useful than a desktop PC! ...that and a spare battery!
Re: UPS & HomeServers - who uses one?
I've had a UPS for a few years and thats just on the main rig, was looking at getting another for the HTPC until I'd seen how prices had jumped even for a basic model, never mind a decent one.

I use an APC SmartUPS 1500 at work and because of this....

...I use work's old APC SmartUPS 1500 with a compatible battery at home :)
