The media costs about £10 a disk!! for these writers and from what I have heard the compatibiity is very poor. The NEC model is supposed to be pretty good.

I second atomicjeep I've tried both Lite-on and NEC single layer DVD writers and the NEC is far better. In fact you can get the dual version for what I paid for my single one only 6 weeks ago (i got the ND 2500 A).They are only around £65 they can onl;y come down in price too.

You can find most modified firmwares linked from this forum:

For a 2500 to 2510 you probably want Herrie's firmware.

well thanks people for the advice but i have one last n00b question, you see these double layer dvds, does it mean that double the data is stored on one side of the dvd like a traditional cd or like PC Formats Dvd that you have to literally turn over?

    Once again tah.

PS: is that NEC drive really the best Dual Layer Dvd Burner? i thought it might be one by Plextor or Richo (if their out) still for that price i won't complain

I also recomend this, got one this morning and its a nice piece of kit.only problem i have with it is the tray sliding out is a bit noisey but everything else is great.Well worth the £57 i paid for it.
and no you don't have to turn the disc over. Both layers are on one side and can be burned without having to turn the disc.
