Re: Need advice re: NAS or DIY PC

Thanks for the advice scaryjim. Unfortunately, i tried undervolting and if i went below 1.20v, my pc would start freezing or rebooting.

I gave up on it mate and now the only way forward is to get a NAS/MEDIA SERVER. You mentioned an E350, but which one? Can i use that as a NAS, so that i can share the media around the house?

How about this gigabyte for £90? It's just a low power PC, so you can do anything with it that you're currently doing with your AM3 setup. You get a slower CPU, but a more powerful GPU, than your current setup.

It might be worth looking at a Llano A4 based system. Idle power consumption is even better than for the Core i3 CPUs!

@ jim - thanks for the link mate. Couple of questions:-

    1. It doesn't state how low the power is and i can't find any info on the net...i'm looking for 25ish watts max - on for 24/7.
    2. Could this be used as a NAS?

@ cat - thanks very much. I'm gonna have a look at this now.

    Cheers

Re: Need advice re: NAS or DIY PC

I use a HP Microserver as my media storage (running Windows Home Server) and a couple of the WD TV Lives as players. Works a treat.

You can get the HP Microsever for £250 plus £100 cashback still I think:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/281915-hp-prol...ack-658553-421

And Scan are doing the WD TV Live players at £80 each at the moment.

The HP Server only uses something like 10watts last time I checked (and thats full wack, drops to about 5 when idle). Just install one of the free linux distros on it with a media server like twonky.

It's something like that, maybe a few watts more. I know it's rediculously low! Obviously depends on how many hard drives you have.

Although a couple of reviews seems to say its nearer 35 watts so could be my meter thats wrong!
