    Dead HD

    Dead HD

A friend from work has brought in their stone age Dell with a dead HD, I have turned it on and the Disk sounds like a grandfather clock!!! I have never herd anything so loud! – I may have time later on in the day to take the HD out and try and slave it on another machine in the fate hope that I could save some data, what do you reckon my chances are? Or another suggestions?

You mean it is dead as in the system wont boot from it?
If so you may still get some data of it if you attach as a slave on another system. This happened to me once ie. the hdd wouldnt boot but I was still able to get most of the important data of it by slaving it on another system and copying the data across. It was damned slow and riddled with errors though .

I've heard that sticking a H/D in the freezer for twenty or so mins sometimes enables you to get some stuff off... Never worked for me though.
