hi guys,
i don't know where everyone's got to, but i need your help!
i'm not happy with the windows 7 setup with a shared drive. It seems slow and windows is slow. Would changing to Windows Home Server or another media server reduce the resources?

all depends what you are sharing, what the spec of the "server" is and how the network is setup.
Could do with a bit more information to help visualise both your setup and what issues your having.
Sorry guys...here they are:-
Hardware:
AMD Athlon II X2 240e 2.8GHz Socket AM3 2MB Cache Energy Efficient Processor
Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H 785G
Kingston 2gb Ddr3 1333mhz Hyperx Memory Cl7(7-7-7-20)
Samsung S223 DVDRW Drive
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD
Software:
Windows 7 Ultimate
XBMC
When you say shared drive, is the drive currently in the PC or accessed across a network?
What is else is accessing this shared drive?
Maybe a bit more RAM and a better graphics card for decoding video would help.
@ Chaos - its a drive on the pc which i have shared on the network for others to access.
@ Cat - it doesn't have any issues with decoding movies...its mainly the share folder thats slow to access.
How is the drive accessed over the network? (wired/wireless/hobbits)
everything is wired over gigabit lan
what kind of switch is it?
there isnt any switch....its a virgin media superhub
Try copy a large file across the network. Tell us what the transfer rate is. Win7 copy should give you some details.
Is there an Antivirus scanning the network share form the other PCs?
already did that and its approx 500mbps
