I remember still using CP/M during my first year at University in a PC lab full of old Olivetti's, and that was in the mid to late 80's. By my second year they'd upgraded to DOS 3.

The Osborne 1 ran CP/M, Digital Research's Basic and that screen was a whooping 5 inches!

I have been around since 1992....

    first pc was :

    a tiny computer (not literally!)
    350mhz pentium 2 mmx tech
    2x 32mb sdram
    8mb video card
    6.4gb hdd
    epson printer
    kodak camera (1mp!!!!!!!!!!)
    random scanner...
Iyama Vision Master 400 - the only part of the computer that is still operational!

Had this bought for me, end of 1997 (nearly 10 years... )

    cost £1400.

    bought a c2d, 2gb, 320gb, 256mb gfx and 19" tft for £1000 in january 2007!

    amazing isnt it??

and the bad news I soldered the entire keyboard! - though it's still of a quality - none have reached since 84 - hand soldered switches!
all the software was frighteningly expensive. Load from cassette was tedious for a supposedly sophisticated machine £100 for a floppy drive - prohibitive - prices only dropped when IBM and the clones arrived.

But I have kept it - just don't know what to do with it!

Re: What was your first PC?

Whatever it was, it had a green screen. I remember typing a letter to Santa on it in 1990/91 when I was 4 or 5 (With some help, of course). Dad eventually bought Asteroids for it. Incredible. It also had a dot matrix printer with the endless stream of perforated paper to print on.

Then in 1997 dad splashed out on a fancy new computer from PC World. It was a Packard Bell with a 150MHz Pentium, 16MB RAM, a hard drive that wasn't big enough to install Flight Simulator 98 on. Once dad had spent another fortune on a new hard drive it could just about run FS98 (Which cost £80 I think!) It eventually chugged to a halt in 2001 when we finally upgraded to a Windows ME pc. Ugh. The old computer took 12 minutes to boot to Windows, sounded like a chainsaw, and couldn't run anything in a decent space of time.

I've used a few since then but my first PC that I've owned myself was this one.

Re: What was your first PC?

A pentium II either 266 or 300mhz I think, it was a good while ago around 1997, it was a Tiny too, I must have been lucky because I recall no problems with that. It had 32mb Ram later upgraded to 96mb, and a Voodoo 2 was added in at some point. Can't remember what the hard drive size was, probably around 15-30GB

It is still going strong albeit struggling with XP (I know, I know, but it isn't in my hands anymore)

Before that it was an Amiga

Re: What was your first PC?

I didn't have quite as old of one as you guys 9I used some, but never owned 'em). First computer i owned was my family's Dell Pentium II 400 MHz with 128 MBs of RAM and an 11 GB hard drive. I can't remember the video card on it...it was either integrated or 16 MBs (or maybe even 8 MBs). Ironically, I'm currently using an old Gateway Pentium II (my girlfriend's computer) until my new rig is finished. This archaic thing is 350 MHz, has 192 MBs of RAM, a 9 GB hard drive, and somehow runs Win XP! lol I miss my Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop that died a few months back...it had a P3-M 866 MHz processor, 256 MBs of RAm, 32MB GeForce 2 Go video card, and a 28 GB hard drive. I used it from 2002 until this past June. It sucked, but was better than this thing.

And to think in a few weeks, I'll have a overclocked quad-core system with 4 GBs of RAM, 320 GBs of HD space, and a GeForce 8800-GT vid card. What a change...lol

Re: What was your first PC?

My first (family) computer was a 486 with probably 16mb of ram (idk..) It ran windows 3.1 for workgroups (11 disk sloppy 3.25 install) and was able to play such games as Hyperoid and Wolfenstein 3-D, not to mention the WYSIWYG DOS word Perfect, this was back when games had to be opened via dos command prompt C:\GAME and then another prompt to start the .exe of the game, yea.. those were the days....

From there I moved to an 800Mhz Pentium 3 with idk maybe 64mb of ram, I used it as a winamp player and thats about it.

From there I got a Gateway and directly after started building my own.

ah, it was a 286 or something a long time back, i can remember one of the games it was to do with blocking in H's with green blocks after an extensive google the game was called Beast, red double H's and various other fun. The keyboard on its own weighed a hefty amount, so solid, they don't make them like that anymore

ZX spectrum - it was great, I remember buying a (fairly slim) book that contained a disassembly of the entire OS.
