Suggestions for mouse to replace Logitech G5(suffering from cable design fault)
It seems my Logitech G5 has started to be affected by the cable problem which many users have experienced(random disconnections and freezes). This is my second G5 - with the first one the plastic mechanism holding the scroll wheel cracked! The current one is the second example I had bought and these issues started happening a few months after a year of usage. Hence,I doubt I can get a warranty replacement. The worst thing is that Logitech have not commented on this issue even though it is a well known fault.
I am a bit peed off TBH,as I expected them to last longer and the build quality seems shoddy compared to the MouseMan and MX1000 which I had before. This is the first time that any mouse I have had has given me issues.
Hence,I do need a replacement for around £30(or less). I would ideally like a weight system(or at least some weight) and need a corded laser mouse with backward and forward buttons. Ideally I would like some non-Logitech options and one which at least will last two years.
Of course I could try repairing the mouse or merging the two G5s together. It would after all cost me nothing which would be ideal ATM.

Give Logitech a shout - their warranty & support team are second to none.
Replaced my MX1000 with an MX Revolution when it had an intermittent cursor lag/disconnection issue, even though I hadn't got the receipt and the serial number on the bottom had worn through (dangers of using an IceMat without their additional feet). Can't fault them at all on that front.

I bought them new in late 2009(they were on offer at Staples). First one failed in August/September 2010(just after 12 months). Started using the second one after that and now this started happening recently.
So basically both of them are outside warranty! :(

As above really - give their tech support team a go - theyre absolutely fantastic!
*edit* - even out of warranty ive still had them issue replacements for peripherals before - dont ask dont get! :p
Re: Suggestions for mouse to replace Logitech G5(suffering from cable design fault)
How might I phrase it and who did you chaps contact??
To summarise the facts:
1.)I bought both G5 mice from Staples in late 2009 as they were on offer
2.)I used the first one for a year or so until the scroll wheel cracked. I actually took the mouse apart and this is why I saw the issue(I put it pack together again).
3.)After,this I started using the second mouse(was new in packaging for just over a year).
4.)Now a year after that,it start having the issues. Now for the last few months they have been getting worse and worse. So technically the mouse is over two years old.
Re: Suggestions for mouse to replace Logitech G5(suffering from cable design fault)
There's very few mice at that price that have optional weights and there's the overall issue of shape (being different people prefer different shaped mice)
Well there's the Coolermaster CM Storm Spawn but it's optical not laser and no optional weights

You could give the Gigabyte GM-M6980 a try

Howabout the silverstone raven mouse? http://www.scan.co.uk/products/silve...tton-pro-gamer!
It's rather heavy (same as the g5 with all it's weights added) and it's got that odd "3d scroll" bubble on the side . . . why does invader zim keep popping into my mind

Obey pustulio, buy the raven mouse

Just be perfectly honest with them - ask for their help rather than demand it, and hope for the best. If it is a polite, well worded email to them (or through their webform thingy, which was how I did mine) then I think you are likely to be pleasantly surprised. I'd focus on the fact you really like the mouse but just feel let down by the fact it didn't last as long as you thought it would - and that you've been very happy with Logitech stuff up until that point (which I presume you have, as you bought two of them!).
I know in the past if they haven't issued a replacement item for whatever reason, some people have received vouchers with money off Logitech products etc. As I say, ymmv, but its is worth the time it takes to write a quick, polite email/webform message imho. :)
Re: Suggestions for mouse to replace Logitech G5(suffering from cable design fault)
Thanks again everyone! Both mice were the full retail packs, as I got them from Staples. Supposedly this would mean at least three to five years warranty on doing some further digging - is this information right??
Looks like I will see if I can badger Logitech then!!
I am a Logitech fan - to put in context I have had a MouseMan,two MX1000 mice, the LX710 cordless laser desktop, and the G11 V2 and G15 V2 gaming keyboards. I wonder if I should mention this too.
What about the purchase dates - is there something as being too honest in this case??
Edit!!
Thanks for the mice suggestion Pob - that Gigabyte looks interesting!!
Re: Suggestions for mouse to replace Logitech G5(suffering from cable design fault)
OK,after the other thread I finally submitted a support ticket. Lets see if the Logitech CS is as good as what people say it is!
This is what I sent them:
"Dear sir/madam
I have been a longterm customer of your company and have bought many of your products - I have the G11 V2 and G15 V2 keyboards, the LX710 wireless desktop,an MX1000 mouse ,the wireless MouseMan,the V150 notebook mouse and a pair of G5 mice(I have attached pictures of some of them). Most of these products I have been pleased with.
However,my experience with the G5 has been anything but good and has really dented my faith in your companies products.
I originally bought a pair of G5 mice in early 2009 from the UK retailer,Staples. However,I ended up using only once mouse initially as I ended up shelving the new build which I was going to do(the other one ended up on the shelf unopened),and used it on my old computer.
The G5 as a mouse was great, however the scroll wheel seem to get stuck which was really annoying. However a few months later I started getting disconnections and huge sensitivity drops. I tried different versions of the setpoint software, different computers and different OSes(XP,Vista and on a new computer with Windows 7),different surfaces and nothing would help. By late 2010,it came to the point the mouse was not reliabily operating. However,I had lost the receipt for the mice,so I could not return it to the retailer. I then decided to use the unopened mouse.
Everything was fine, until early this year and the SAME disconnection and sensitivity drop issues started again. Tried the same tests as with the other mouse to no avail.
I ended up getting a Dell mouse off a mate which I have been using since.I told him what happened and he pointed me to a few forums and such posts as the following:
http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Mice-H...de/td-p/127836
It seems this cable issue has been noted by people on many forums. I was never aware of this fault/problem in the first place.
TBH,I am really dissapointed with this happening and really expected them to last much longer!!:( The mice were really nice to use too.
Is there anyway to get them repaired??
With kind regards"
Re: Suggestions for mouse to replace Logitech G5(suffering from cable design fault)
Also realised it is early 2009,when I bought the mouse too.
I wish I knew about the issue in 2010!!:(
Re: Suggestions for mouse to replace Logitech G5(suffering from cable design fault)
I would suggest the Mionix Naos 3200, you can find it for around £35. Although it doesn't come with weights. If you want a weighted version, you'd have to go with the Naos 5000, which is almost double the cost.

I've done something like this before. Get an USB extension cord of the rough length you want and snip off the end with the socket. It's only 4 wires (5 if the shield is connected), so it's really not hard to DIY ;) Works just fine and costs next to nothing.
But yeah.. try contacting the support guys first.

Naos 5000 looks fantastic, but good luck finding it anywhere!

Have a look at the Razer line up. I have the razer imperator myself and it;s great. Will depend on what you use your mouse for e.g FPS or MMORPG e.t.c. Usually anything above 6400 Dpi is overkill. I usee 1800 DPI myself.
Re: Suggestions for mouse to replace Logitech G5(suffering from cable design fault)
I use this keyboard but my Logitech RX1000 laser mouse (wired) has not stopped working so the mouse is sitting idle for now. link
Re: Suggestions for mouse to replace Logitech G5(suffering from cable design fault)
For my last three mice I've had a Razer Deathadder, a Roccat Kone [+] and now the Cyborg R.A.T 7.
Out of the last three I have to say that the Cyborg R.A.T 7 is just awesome, lots of customisation (change the size, weight and position of almost everything), good range of DPI settings, enough additional buttons for real day-2-day uses and not a silly amount like some mice have, I just can't fault it! I'm sure they have offerings (R.A.T 3 & R.A.T 5) which will be closer to your price range and maybe worth a look.
Stay away from the Roccat Stuff though, their build quallity is questionable. I've returned 3 things to them in under 6 months!! So won't be using them again in the future!
The Deathadder was really good and served me well for years, I passed it over to my brother about a year ago and it's still going strong although he did mention that it could do with some new pads on the bottom. He had always had Logitech mice before the Razer mouse he got from me but he said he will be getting a Razer naga Hex to replace it when he builds his new system this month.
I'm not sure if they still make these but a good few years ago I got a zBoard Reaper edge gaming mouse and it seemed sweet at the time although it would most likely suck by today's standards lol!!
good luck in finding the right mouse for you :)
