I still highly rate the Microsoft Intellimouse Optical 1.1. It's a lot better than some of Microsoft's newer offerings
As a basic cheap mouse the Logitech B110 Optical is good, just a basic 2 button mouse but does have the scroll wheel with left/right
The Microsoft Intellimouse Optical 1.1 was a great mouse, AFAIK it's not made any more
the current one it the Microsoft Optical Mouse 2.1 which is just a basic two buttons and a scroll wheel
However a laser mouse would be nice as they will work on almost any surface, so you don't need a mouse mat.
Optical mice generally don't work well on a shiney surface but a laser mouse will, the big problematic surface is Glass, the vast majority of mice will not work on glass, there are some mice that work on glass they are specially designed for it and are not cheap.

Bought a wireless optical mouse from Asda at £5. Don't know what the battery life is like but works fine. Stubby USB receiver slots into base for storage.
MS intellimouse explorer 2 is great. Although used daily batteries last over 12 months.
I had battery life issue with one of the basic Logitech wireless mice too, I cannot remember the model but it used AAA (one I think but might of been two) standard duracell's would last just over 1 month, rechargeable AAA would last under 1 month before needing recharging.
The reason I'm pretty sure was that the mouse was constantly on even when the pc was off.
Batterys are the reason I go for wired mice.
