Re: AMD Athlon II X4 651K

Must admit I went with AMD for the price bracket and at the time they could clock really well. I went back to Intel on the P4 and then the Q6600. Must admit I am looking into AMD a lot more for the next system due to the cost and also my PC gaming isn't what it used to be. I have no need to throw the biggest amount of power at a system. Looks like AMD are starting to be the better bang for buck. Lower prices and also offers just enough for what I would need it for now.

Decent price / performance ratio with that one.

There is also a new FX Quad coming soon which I am interested in, it runs at 4.1 stock. Thinking an AM3+ board and that CPU could be my next upgrade.

My current Phenom 2 X4 965 BE is doing nicely however so I can safely sit and wait to see what AMD brings out this year. I dont like the prices on the Intel stuff, boards and processors are far more expensive than the AMD stuff. Been AMD now for around 10 years all told and staying that way.

Thanks for those Cat. I may be looking at the new system for someone in the near future, and those AMD devices (always liked AMD! ) seem to be good value for money.

The CPU is socket FM1 though and lacks the IGP of the A8 series, but FM1 motherboards are quite cheap now.

OTH,FM1 motherboards are not that expensive:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigab...s-on-board-atx

The second one is quite decent and is used in the review. Cheaper motherboards start from about £42.

You need to stop linking to the cheap deals. I was putting off an upgrade and with those prices it almost seems to cheap not to upgrade xD

Also Cat, if I were to move from a Q6600 would these new chips give me a bit more head room in gaming as the Q6600 is starting to show its age and chug along in some modern games :/

    Just O/C the Q6600?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Is it overclocked?? I went from a Q6600 at around 3GHZ to a Core i3 2100 and it was an improvement although I moved to DDR3 and Windows 7 64 bit at the same time too(had Vista 32 bit and 4GB DDR2). OTH,a Core i3 2100 is in between a 3.2GHZ to 4GHZ Phenom II X4 in most games. The move was sort of sideways but my old SD37P2 was having issues after nearly four and a half years!

My Q6600 at 3GHZ could just about push an HD5850 1GB running at 925MHZ for the core(stock core speed is 725MHZ for the GPU) to 100% when playing Crysis2 under DX11.

The Q6600 I have was the unlocked G0 I think they were, hits around 3.2GHz but mine has always ran hot as hell clocked. So much so last summer with the hot weather I had to go back to stock. I have a Titan Fernir on there with it, case never jumps very high in temp, not an air flow issue but since getting the chip, cores 0, 2, 3 all run mid 30's to low 50's clocked, core 1 runs at least 20c higher again clocked.

I did lap the chip to rule out uneven surface where the heatsink connects with the Q6600 but the temps stayed the same. Not sure why that core sits higher than all the rest. At stock the Q6600 core 1 will sit in the high 50's clock it and its getting close to throttling itself. As I say though the rest of the system is as cool as you like, just this one core that seems to rocket above the rest even at idle.

My system specs are to the left there. I have the Asus 5870 1GB card at stock atm as if that system goes bang I have nothing at all for a few months whilst I piece together parts for a new system, far to much on work wise to risk losing the machine (came close to it last summer with the heat and clocking it xD )

I guess I am looking at something that will last for a fair few years again. Would only really need a cpu/memory/mobo will keep the card I have for now for another year if I can, might need to up the PSU, got a Corsair 650w modular at present, if I go crossfire that may need to be bumped a 850w or there about.

My Q6600 had a stuck temperature sensor on one core. I would have a look at this article and do the test:

Thanks for the heads up, I will test that this evening. I had read about the issue with bad temp reporting but just put it to one side at the time as I was messing on with other things. Will give this a shot and see if mine is one of the ones with the issue. Might explain the abnormal 20c difference between this one core.

    EDIT:

Done the test, and not a single probe seems to report a similar temp across different cores. Mainly core 2 and 3 are within 1c of each other, core 0 is another 2 - 3c below that and then core 1 is somewhere between 6 - 9c lower again.

I guess its just the poor temp detection on the Q6600.

Hmm....how do these compare to my current X6 (3.5Ghz) ?

£140 for new board+CPU, pop in some new RAM and sell my old lot wouldn't cost me that much at all I reckon (?)
