My arctic coolers going to snap!!

Well almost I have some questions now that Ive fitted one,

    1) The power cable on the arctic vga cooler is a 2 pin but my power connector not molex but the small fan one) is a 3 pin , Ive mnaged to connect the 2 pin one to the 3 pin slot and it seems to run fine at low and high speed but is this correct?

    2) The temperature (from a temp probe put on the allu block next to gpu) reads 60 degrees at load with high fan speed on isnt this a bit high? It should be 47 according to arctic cooling with full fan on.

    3) The weight of the the arctic cooler is such that when its mounted the card is bending slightly on the edge that is unsupported surely that cant be good for the card? Do I needs to support this corner of the card with some sort of prop?

Anybody knows any answers pleasse let me know as IM worried about a number of problems above
    thnx

The fan connector is supposed to connect to the header on the graphics card. However, I've run that sort of connector through a 3pin fan header before with no problems.

I don't know about temps (although they sound OK,) but with regards to the bending: Have you tried remounting the thing just be sure that it's on and secured properly?

Cool well thast answered most questions for the bending it is mounted properly this is the corner which is unsupported, ie the grafix card is supportred by the agp slot, the pci screw on the case itself but the far corner od the card hasd nothing to support it and the weight if the cooler itself (as its mounted upside down just like any normal card) is "pulling" the card down in the far corner. Just seems weird to me , tyhis wouldnt be a problem in a desktop but it is in a tower.

Its two slot right? use both thumbscrews and makes ure they are tight. Make sure the screws in the blue bracket are fairly tight- it needs to be secure for cooling and to hold the cooler on the card

It is a 2 slot card although the second bracket with the switch on for fan speed is not connected to the cooler at all (it is by wire but no physical connection), this doesnt attach to the arctic cooler unit, Ive screwed both of them in as tight as possible so I reckon thats it. At the moment the weight of the arctic cooler is allon the radeon bracket on the top slot. There is no way to connect the second bracket with the switch on to the cooler unit that I could see nor did they say anything in the instructions

Soory no pics a digi camera is way to expensive for me atm. The card isnt bending much just a bit but it looks under strain which is a bit odd but the cooler is very heavy?

This is weird in all the reviews the switch I am using is on a think metal bracket with lots of slats in it , but these reviews ahve a piece like this which wasnt in the pack

    http://www.riscx.com/reviews/9800_ar..._cooler_14.asp

Perhaps Im not meant to remove the bracket on the rev3 cooler?

*phew* wipes brow the rev 3 is different its been installed correctly

    http://www.ocfaq.com/reviews/ArcticC...Silencer_Rev3/

so in conclusion Ive done it right but anyone reading this

    PLEASE NOTE:
The weight of the cooler in a tower case causes quite a load on the unsupported edge of the card which does bend slightly, Im gonna try and prop this up somehow tonight to take the strain off the card but this is a correct installtion so all is apprently ok.

thansk for the replies it would be helpful if some review sites noted the rev or version of products but there u go

BTW Even rev 3 does not work on the connect3D 9600pro or 9600xt

the fan connector for these modles is a larger pin version then the one provided with the cooler

*ouch* now thats a show stopper, Im not that impressed witht he cooler tbh , the weight of the cooler is too much for 1 bracket to hold I think the rev 2 looked better a s a holder for it, so I may look at getting another cooler for the card as this isnt up to it in my oppinion. Also alstho ive put the 2 pin power connector on the 3 pin board thats not good its supposed to be compatible with mt card and really its not.

so thumbs down here for rev 3

My card sags even without an arctic cooler. My case is crap so I don't even use the retaining screw, the VGA cable poking through the slot keeps the card in place pretty well. I used to put a fan resting on top of the card to blow air onto the northbridge. Never had any probs at all.

Computer PCBs are amazingly robust, I never worry too much about abusing them.

the joy of hindsight ...........*gets coat*

Rave you have a good point its not the first time Ive done amateurish modding perhaps theres nothing to worry about I mean if these things did knacker the cards there would have been loads of complaining and the rev 3 is insatalled correctly by looking at the article above

a good question is why I do this to myself why not just stop modding?

*fat chance* Id remove the chance of making myself look clever in front of the wife *cough*
