    from what ive heard the only difference is sata and firewire, NF7 has soundstorm iirc

    Normal NF7 doesnt have soundstorm certification, only the NF7-S does.

    quick NFS 7 question, is the chipset fan 'whiney', and if so can it be replaced with a zalman passive one ?

    Not really whiney, but about the same noise as a normal 40mm fan.
    The NF2 chipset specification is only a passive heatsink, but Abit have gone with a active one as its aimed at overclockers more (although its not the best in the world really).
    A zalman passive one would work fine
