Will I see gains from this cooling?
Hi All,
I find myself in a dilemma.
I recently bought a load of watercooling parts from Blueball (thanks again btw) but i'm not sure now.
The rig is built and air cooled using a BeQuiet HSF
CPU is a i5 2500K running at 4.7Ghz, GFX card will be updated to a top end Nvidia when they are launched, not sure what yet.
Thing is even at that OC i have not seen temps over 58c when being pushed and 35 ish when idle.
I know the new GPU will run hotter but am I likey to see any gains on the CPU? And is there any point considering I need to buy the blocks?
Using a Laing DDC Pump and two XSPC rads, 120 and a 240. Not sure if its worth ripping it all apart now! Wasn't expecting such good temps on air!
Whats your opinion? What would you do? Leave well enough alone or go for it?
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
i would check the temps with aida64 to see what the cores get up to, sounds to low to be true.
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
That's what I thought but 58 to 60 reported in core temp and 63 max in speed fan.
Will check in another program but strange that those two report so low.
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
Ok all three programs report the same within a deg or two. 69c with cpu at 100% stress.
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
See, that WC stuff I sold you is so effective you don't even need to plug it all in ;)
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
I'd like to know which cooler you're using ? Dark Rock Pro ?
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
Dark Rock Advanced. Just updated everything, ran 100% stress test again and peaked once at 71, sable at 66-69.
been gaming for the last 20 mins and its not peaked over 58.
So no need for the WC then?
Blue my system must know its sitting downstairs so is doing its best to perform!
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
remember, when hot summer days hit and the temps up by 10 degrees the knock on effect could put the pc temps up 20 degrees.
if u have wc kit why not use it :)
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
Good point, didn't think about the summer lol.
Does WC handle ambient temp rises better then?
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
not really, but lower ambient temps and the ability to shift more heat via the rad really helps when its needed.
and your overclock will remain more stable.
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
IMHO you should still see some lowering of the cpu temps at max load, maybe even some at idel but water cooling the graphics card is where you will see the most gain. I find typical load temps down by 15 -20 degrees over stock air cooling which can equate to 10 degrees over custom cooling depending upon the card and also no fan noise.
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
Personally I would not bother with watercooling and stick with the Air cooler would be wasting your money tbh.
How often is your CPU going to be running at 100% even in the hottest day remember your only running it a 100% to test the max temps it will not run at this on everyday use.
Average the Temps on normal use then add 20 degrees I guess the temps will be more than fine :)
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
Gah the dilemma!
I will have to spend another 100 at least on blocks then fluid etc do want to be sure it's worth it.

The difference in temps if this is the cost is not worth it. Remember water cooling was originally when extreme enthusiasts wanted to OC hot running CPU's which Air cooling wasn't sufficient to get the highest overclocks.
Air cooling is not far behind and you are running Sandy Bridge which runs Cool in comparison anyway.
No need unless you want to show you mates your nice water cooling loops :)
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
Don't be misled - water cooling your i5 *will* decrease the temperatures. But it probably won't help you push your overclock much further, as it's because increasingly less common for overclocking to be limited by thermals, simply because CPUs have become increasingly power efficient and cooler running anyway.
The thing is watercooling really excels where there is a very large power output, and as Paulm says that's not so much the case with the i5. However, it is still the case with GPUs, and your graphics card will love you for water cooling it. Plus the reduced temperature of your components in general should help to increase their longevity, and there's a good chance your computer will be quieter overall as well. So there's still plenty of reasons to push on with the watercooling set up, if you have the money and inclination do to so. And that'#s something only you can decide, really.
Re: Will I see gains from this cooling?
I personally went watercooling for silence and performance, ive finally got to a point where silence is actually true! Only thing i can hear is my psu fan now (very quiet)! And performance is generally great, currently cpu idling at 22C and GPU 17c, with intel burn and furmark the cpu hits max 41C and gpu 30C(460gtx @890Mhz core). My cpu is only at 4ghz mind, but this is also with my radiators being cooled by Gentle typhoon fans at 600RPM, if i wanted/needed more cooling performance ill just turn the dial on my fans, they can go up to 1400 so crap loads of cooling available.
If you have the watercooling equipment id recommend doing it, however if its just for the cpu id say im not sure if its worth it! If you're after silence then watercooling will destroy any alternatives.
