    Modding a PSU and capacitor charge

    I'm sitting here with a Generic PSU that hasent been used for 3 weeks and want to take the two heaksinks off the daugter board inside - so you think the capacitors are still gonna give me a shock cos i'm gonna have to touch them?

    Firstly Im interested as to what your trying to do. the low voltage caps wont harm you but the 240 volt ones will. The 240v ones however are usually quite small in uf and probably wont be more than 400uf. Yes its a big capacitor, but not usefull for anything thats not at that voltage - it will just waste board space as a 50v cap of same uf will be about 1/5 of the size.

    Before stealing any caps from the pcb you will want to drain them. One way is to short them but this could make the cap explode ... not sure...
    Or use a low value (1-100 ohm) resistor leave it connected for a few minuites.

    Infact my psu is open right now, the one im usng to type this.... not a problem though as I know how they work, and i know which bits shouldnt be touched.

    Simple rule is to keep your whole body insulated from electrical connection, then if you touch something live, it wont have anywhere to go, and you wont get a shock. That isnt always possible, but when working around HV (high enough to kill anyway) ONLY USE ONE HAND! as that prevents an electrical connection between your hands going though your heart, which will easly kill you.

    If your wondering why my psu is open, Im currently making all the connectors modular - so I can unplug the psu without having to unplug every device. Also using much thicker cable, doing 3 vsense mods and a nice bl00 box to house it all

    Shouldnt do, leave it unplugged and connect some fans to it. Then short the green to any ground wire. Should discharge them safely. Thats what i do anyway.

    cheers for the advice chaps, i'm basically just stealing some bits from it.

    Whilst we are also on the subject what pins do i short to switch it on; to switch it on, if its not connected to a mobo?

    Well if you only want the heatsinks I'd say the best bet would be to throw the whole lot into a sink full of tapwater first . That should sort out any charged capacitors.

    Connect green to black and it turns on.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();
