    Laptop hardware/price cofusion

    Hi all,

I wasn't sure if this was best in hardware or laptops, given it's a laptop related hardware question

I was having a nose at a pair of gaming laptops:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-m...7-hp-bluetooth

    and

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-m...rw-webcam-w7hp

Now what is confusing me is the graphics card - it appears that the less expensive laptop has a vastly superior card, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 vs NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M.

Would that be right/common? Am I reading it correctly? It seems odd to me that for a pair of 'gaming' laptops, a higher end one would use a weaker card and a yet a higher end screen resolution.

I'm not certain I'll even be getting one of these, but I can't tell which is the better buy, any thoughts from folks?

Seems you're right about the graphics card unfortunately: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-...M.66964.0.html

From what I've gathered by looking at laptops, you can almost never get everything you want in one - there are always compromises to be made unless you spend an absurd amount.

They always seem to mismatch parts too. Sometimes you get a nice graphics card but poor processor and poor screen, other times you get a nice screen but poor graphics lol.

    Re: Laptop hardware/price cofusion

The added cost is probably in the cpu, but at the same time there's other factors
Full listed laptop specs are unfortunately very flaky, eg hard drives, 750gb but what speed? one could be 5600rpm and the other 7200rpm
Screen is probably a big chunk of it the cheaper model is 1366x768 where as the more expensive one is listed as 1920x1080
Cheaper wireless network cards often feature in here as well, the intel wireless cards are probably the best with fewest compatibility, signal and latency issues but are a lot more expensive.
No mention of the graphic ram, dedicated or shared or a combination of both? what speed/type?

Off hand for gaming I'd go with the cheaper one if I had too, better gpu, lower resolution (which is better as it'll reduce the load on the gpu) cpu weaker but still plenty good enough for games.

Of course if I had that sort of money for a gaming system then I'd build/buy a pc not a laptop, but if I needed something portable, then I'd buy something cheaper that is portable and spend the remainder on upgrades for my pc.
Or even a netbook and a bit of money on upgrading it

    Re: Laptop hardware/price cofusion

If you are looking for a gaming laptop, don't forget to look at the Dell Outlet site.

You can pick so some very good systems with a decent discount if you don't mind a refurb.

I bought one a couple of months ago, not bad for £582 exe vat...

    XPS L702x
Graphics : 3GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M Graphics Card
    Silver Anodized Aluminum
Processor: Intel Core i7-2670QM (2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz)
    Display: 17.3-inch Wide FHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD
750 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
Wireless: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 (1x2 b/g/n+ Bluetooth Combo Card)
    Battery : Primary 9-cell 90W/HR LI-ION
    8X DVD +/- RW DRIVE
    6 GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHZ (2 DIMMs)
    English Windows 7 Professional SP1 (64 Bit)

You still get warranty with the choice to upgrade it. I'd definitely buy from them again, you can't tell the laptop was a refurb.

    Re: Laptop hardware/price cofusion

Thanks folks, it's a tricky proposition. As mentioned most specs I see are a hotchpotch of random bits or horrendously overpriced :/

Needs to be a laptop as I can't spare the space for a second gaming rig, I get enough abuse about the first one!

I didnt know about the outlet site, interesting, thanks.
