Remove BD Drive from external enclosure

    Hey all,

I've just snagged myself one of these for £50: http://www.liteonit.eu/en/optical-st...r/ehbu212.html I went to get another drive but it was out of stock and they knocked some £££ off. The only issue really is that the other drive I was after was an internal drive, this is external.

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas as to removing it? Is it simply a case of if I remove it I could just put it into my machine or could the connector possibly be different?

I'd appreciate some input as I don't want to be taking the case apart to find out I can't. I can't access any downloads on the LiteOn site at the moment either.

Re: Remove BD Drive from external enclosure

Depends if it is native USB3 or a SATA to USB bridge chip. If it is the latter, you can remove it and fit it as a normal internal drive.

You could still conntect a USB drive to the motherboard's internal USB headers, although if it uses power connectors other than the ones off a standard PSU that could be a little more complicated.

Re: Remove BD Drive from external enclosure

Looks like it's a standard 5.25" drive in a case, whether or not you can get the case apart without damage is another matter.

Re: Remove BD Drive from external enclosure

Sussed it out, it is indeed just a standard SATA drive.

I made a little video if anyone is interested, it's not hard, but I thought I'd share it as there doesn't seem to be much info on the web.

Interesting stuff Danny. So now you have a BD drive and a USB3-Sata enclosure for £50? Bargain

Re: Remove BD Drive from external enclosure

Nice one. funny the way it's £10 cheaper than the internal drive, so for £10 less you get the drive and an external usb3 optical drive enclosure, which you could put your old DVDr/w in in case you need an external drive. (useful if you own a netbook or similar as they don't have an optical drive)

Thanks for the thanks lads, it's appreciated, it wasn't too difficult at all and I'm just awaiting the arrival of some BD-Rs to test it out fully.
