Sandy or Ivy bridge?

Hey guys,

Been looking at getting a new rig for some time and with Ivy bridge just round the corner am I worth holding out to see whats going to be on offer (or more importantly how its going to effect the current sandy bridge processors prices) or should I just take my chances now in hope that the ivy bridge processors don't make too big of a splash?

Same as you I'm due a new rig. I would wait a few days though and see the retail reviews of the ivy Bridge's when the NDA is lifted (supposedly 23rd April) rumour has it. It's only a two day wait so why not?

The engineering sample preview's I've seen don't overclock that well but that might have changed for the retail chip. So I might end up getting a sandy bridge anyway.

From what I've seen/heard from others too the sandy bridge price won't drop much if anything at all.

I guess I'm not the only one then, tbh the new tech will be over priced for me but it might drop the prices of the older stuff which means I can get more for my £££

SB prices wont drop too much most have reported. Intel dont need to drop prices on products that are class leading. Until AMD competes they wont drop prices. I think also it depends how much overclocking you want and what cooler your using.

I agree. Intel have never really been known for their price cutting in the past.

Guess this means I'll be waiting a few days not that I wouldn't have anyway as would want advice on any build before actually purchasing it.

Well it looks like Ivy Bridge isn't going to be out until next year so I guess your safe to buy Sandy for now. Just get an Ivy Bridge compatible Mothorboard and your set

what makes you say that? If i remember correctly the GTX680 wasn't released until 5~6PM GMT.

If you read the first post of the forum I've linked you can see the BBC have already mentioned IB today and that the OP of that thread though NDA was till 6PM.

A co-worker said to me this morning that in the BBC Report it stated 2013. I haven’t had chance to read it yet and I'm stuck at work until 20:00 but I don't see any reason as to why they would give me false information. I will see if I can get a chance to read it on my "lunch break" at 15:00.

It says their next gen after Ivy Bridge is 2013 (ie 14nm, Haswell).

I've just had a very quick scan of the report and the only dates I could see are:

"Intel plans to incorporate 14nm transistors by 2013 and 10nm by 2015."

So I'm not sure where he got next year for the 22nm tech release date.... maybe he was just trying to wind me up knowing that I'm after a new PC.... wait until I see him!

$249.99 for the Core i5 3570K and $339.99 for the Core i7 3770K.

With 20% VAT,I would estimate around £185 for the Core i5 3570K and around £250 for the Core i7 3770K.

The pulled Legit Reviews Core i7 3770K review indicated they need around 1.52V to reach 4.8GHZ which seems rather high IMHO. I suspect a better cooler would also be needed than the equivalent SB CPU due to the smaller IB die as it probably would run hotter.

Hopefully,we will know soon and it will be interesting to see if E0 or E1 stepping CPUs are tested.

Just read that we can expect to see the release of the first Ivy Bridge chips as early as the 29th April so in that case I think I'm going to hold off a little longer and see whats going to happen.

If the i5 3570k is going to be £185 I'll probably just get the i5 2500k

So far i5 3570k price is about £174 (i7 £250), which is £15 more then 2500k.

Found info on Overclockers forum that this is 'introductory price' and can go up soon (at least in their shop). We will see. Is there was something like this on 2500k launch?
