Slot-loading Optical Drives?
I've scoured several websites and these drives seem to be a total mystery, in fact I'm begining to believe they don't even exist!
Does anyone know anywhere that sells standard form full size (not slim) DVD or BluRay optical drives for a 5 1/2" PC bay? :o
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
Can't you just get a 5.25" -> Slimline adapter and a slimline drive?

Do you know where I can get these? Even better if it ships with common sense included!
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
This is the sort of thing I'm thinking of: http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_38007.html or http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_3972.html
I was looking into them a while back because I wanted to see if I could cram a 3.5" drive plus a slimline optical into a 5.25" bay. Mind you, they aren't cheap - depends if you value the storage capabilities or not. If you would value the hard drive space in there, great value for money, if you don't need it, suddenly it seems a bit pricey.
Depends how much you can source a 5.25" slot loader for though I guess. Hopefully there's something a bit cheaper elsewhere.

I remember Plextor use to do something like the 5.25" Slimline bay adapter. Haven't seen anything like it in a long while though. Sorry.

Nice spot there mate, the one I was thinking of was a dual slot drive holder!
Slot loading drives are around £25 IIRC, thats a DVD Rewriter BTW!
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
Thats exactly the type of thing I'm looking for! Thanks a lot! :)
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
Scan do a nice Silverstone 5.25 to slimline adapter which has a 2.5" HDD dock in it too.
Here
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
Lian Li does a similar thing but in lovely brushed aluminium called the Lian Li EX-553X. More expensive though.
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
I remember the first time I saw a slot loading 5.25" optical drive (think it was a cd rom) I thought it was so cool, but they don't seem to exist any more :( only slimline come in slot loading now.
That's one thing I like apple for, they seem to be one of the main reasons slot loading drives still exist.
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
I think it's due to the failure rate of slot loaders. I still think they're pretty cool but when a disk gets stuck inside I don't think it's cool anymore haha. Don't quote me on this one though as it's just a guess!
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
Most cars use a slot loading drive, so does the Nintendo Wii, PS3 and Apple computers but your right, I've had a good search on the main components websites and there doesn't seem to be many of them about these days..... Strange eh?!
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
All those thing use slim drives not 5.25" drives.
Must say those adaptor bays look like a nice solution.
Why the heck is the black version of that silverstone one nearly twice the price? http://www.scan.co.uk/products/silve...rive-bay-black
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
Maybe it's just because black is so much more popular that the others need to go cheap to actually shift them.
I paid £50 more for my AV receiver to get it in black a few years back.
Re: Slot-loading Optical Drives?
It's weird my case made by silverstone was £30 more in silver than black :p, it is probably because the silver is on clearance but black isn't yet
